Ultimate Fighting: Threat to boxing? It's all the Rage

They scrap like wildcats in an octagonal metal cage, kicking, punching and jumping all over each other, inflicting the sort of bodily harm normally dished out down back-alleys. In America it is called Ultimate Fighting, a brutal amalgam of martial arts and mayhem that is becoming something of a cult here as Cage Rage. And it reckons it has mainstream boxing on the ropes.

In December, more than 14,000 fans packed the MGM Grand hotel in Las Vegas for an Ultimate Fighting Championship bill, twice as many as watched Ricky Hatton's world title bout against Juan Urango further down The Strip a fortnight later. It is catching on, and its biggest catch is Marc Ratner, the commissioner who ran boxing in Nevada, who has jumped ship with the state's leading boxing doctor, Margaret Goodman.

Rumor: Brandon Vera, Offer on the table to leave UFC??

Well, a UFCjunkie source present at the UFC 67 weigh-ins last night overheard a conversation between a source close to the UFC - ring announcer Bruce Buffer - and UFC fighter Kendall Groves, who is known to be a friend of Vera. It was disclosed that Vera apparently has an offer on the table from another organization - which organization was not mentioned - for “loads of money to sign with them”. Buffer was heard to be telling Groves to “talk some sense in to (Vera)” and that “if (Vera) leaves this arena, it will be a big mistake for him”.

'CroCop' is big favorite in UFC debut

Mirko Filipovic the private citizen fulfilled a lifelong ambition in 2004 when he was elected to the Croatian parliament.

But he quickly grew disillusioned with the double-crossing and back-room wheeling and dealing of politics, and he's unsure if he'll seek a second four-year term in 2008.

But CroCop -- the nickname by which Filipovic is commonly known in the mixed martial arts world -- could be elected king of the Ultimate Fighting Championship, judging by the reaction he received from a small, vocal crowd Friday at the weigh-in for tonight's pay-per-view card at Mandalay Bay.

Filipovic, 32, will make his UFC debut after a lengthy career in the Pride Fighting Championship when he meets unbeaten but inexperienced Eddie Sanchez in a three-round non-title bout.

Eddie Sanchez: Natural Born Fighter

By Greg Savage

“If you want to be the best,” UFC heavyweight Eddie Sanchez claims, ”You’ve got to fight the best.”

Lucky for him Joe Silva came calling with an invitation to fight one of, if not the most menacing striker the world of mixed martial arts has ever seen. In drawing the unenviable task of dueling with the juggernaut that is Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic, Sanchez will get his wish to prove he belongs among the world’s better heavyweights.

The build up to the talented Croatian’s North American debut has seen many, if not all observers quick to dispatch Sanchez as little more than a welcoming mat that “Cro Cop” will use to wipe his feet with on his way in the UFC front door.

While the media and fans have been quick to write off the undefeated underdog, Sanchez has been preparing for an opportunity of a lifetime. Not one to despair in the face of long odds, the 24 year-old native of Vista, CA only has to recall another instance in his not-so-distant past to fortify his confidence.

UFC Interested In Kid Yamamoto & Event In Japan?

Las Vegas, NV 2/1 (2/2 Japan time) - The UFC has shown interest in god's child. After the 2006 PRIDE Open-Weight Champ Mirko Crocop (32 = Croatia) transferred to the world's largest MMA organization, the amount of attention on the UFC has greatly increased. President Dana White (37) revealed that he would like to hold an event in Japan, possibly by the end of this year. It would be the first event in Japan in seven years. White also indicated interest in both the 2005 HERO's Middleweight champion Norifmi KID Yamamoto and PRIDE's Lightweight champion Takanori Gomi. Japan's MMA is being invaded by black ships.

With its popularity zooming, the UFC is paying attention to Japan's top stars.

UFC President Dana White: "From a personal perspective, not as a UFC representative, I think that KID Yamamoto and Gomi are extremely good fighters. They could both be champions in our organization. K-1 is kickboxing so it's a bit different, but PRIDE has some magnificent fighters. It's for certain that us and PRIDE have the best quality fighters."

THE BREAKDOWN: UFC 67 “ALL OR NOTHING”

By Stash Capar

Tonight at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, 18 mixed martial artists will go toe-to-toe in a strong, yet often one-sided card for UFC 67’s “All Or Nothing.”

Headlining the card is the new UFC middleweight champion, Anderson “The Spider” Silva (17-4-0), though what was supposed to become the title-holder’s first defense was kabashed yesterday when challenger Travis Lutter (9-3-0) failed to make the 185-pound limit.

The bout has been reduced to a three-round, non-title bout.

Lutter, a man known for his remarkable submission skills, is coming off a three-win streak, though the aftermath of yesterday’s drama clearly left the reserved Texan drained both mentally and physically for tonight’s challenge.

RANDY COUTURE OPENS XTREME GYM TODAY

Randy Couture has long been considered one of the smartest most adaptable fighters in mixed martial arts. As he has gotten a little bit older, the 43 year-old Couture has proven that his smarts and adaptability aren’t limited to his “in-ring” experiences, although he is making his return to the Octagon on March 3rd to challenge UFC Heavyweight Champion Tim Sylvia.

Couture has long been a part of various other ventures outside of competing. He and longtime training partner Matt Lindland started their own fight promotion, Sportfight, several years ago and it is still going strong. Anacondas Triumph, Lindland Dominates

Houston, TX – Bas Rutten’s L.A. Anacondas had a point to prove Friday night against the defending champion Silverbacks, and after an exhilarating 3-2 team victory they have the satisfaction they were denied in 2006, even if they don’t have the rings.

“This was the finals for us,” said coach Rutten after the victory. “In our minds now, we’re the champions. We don’t need a ring. We’re going to take it, but we don’t need it.”

The Anacondas certainly fought as if the championship was on the line, twice battling back from what looked like certain defeat.

Weight issues cause huge shift in odds

In tonight`s "All or Nothing" UFC main event, Travis Lutter will have to go with nothing.

The conditioning questions surrounding Lutter peaked when the Ultimate Fighter 4 winner failed to make weight for his middleweight title bout against Anderson Silva at UFC 67 this Saturday night.

Lutter, who was awarded the title shot as part of the UFC Reality Show, weighed in at 187 pounds during Friday’s weigh-in at the Mandolin Bay Event Center, putting him over the 185-pound limit and nixing the chance to become the next Middleweight champion.

While the fight will continue as scheduled, the middleweight crown will not be up for grabs. Bettors rushed to the sportsbooks after hearing the news of Lutter’s failed attempt to make weight, moving him from a +280 underdog to +375 as of Saturday morning.

UFC fighter has faced bigger obstacles than opponent

Eddie Sanchez knows he's an 8-to-1 underdog heading into tonight's fight with Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic in Las Vegas. Sanchez hears the whispers from mixed-martial arts fans who think he's crazy, stupid or too inexperienced ---- or all three. And he's well aware most everyone, fans and experts alike, are saying he's going to get his head kicked in.

The San Marcos High graduate has heard it all ---- and none of it bothers him. For Sanchez, this heavyweight bout is nothing more than a sparring session compared to the life-threatening ordeal he faced 3 1/2 years ago.

Whether it's stupidity or a swagger that can only come from cheating death, the 24-year-old North County Fight Club member isn't afraid of the prospect of going head-to-head with Filipovic, the Ultimate Fighting Championship's newest poster boy.

Ultimate fighter ready to put on an ultimate fight

Scott Smith sounds carefree. He takes a look around Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas and begins to recount his week.

The mixed martial arts fighter from Elk Grove gambled a little and bowled some. The rest of his time was spent relaxing and cutting weight, leading up to tonight's Ultimate Fighting Championship middleweight bout.

Smith's cool demeanor doesn't mean he's not prepared.

"The hard work is done," said Smith, 27.

Now he's eager to show his celebrity isn't built on one highlight-reel-worthy knockout. As this moment's UFC "it" fighter, Smith (12-2) has a lot riding on the 7 p.m. pay-per-view bout when he takes on the hard-hitting Canadian Patrick Cote (9-4).

Smith, whose nickname is "Hands of Steel," gained notoriety among mixed martial arts fans for appearing on the popular Spike TV reality show "The Ultimate Fighter 4: The Comeback."

Small fighters sizzle

By STEVE SIEVERT

Fight fans love the heavyweights, but at the International Fight League's Houston debut Friday night at Reliant Arena, the two smallest fighters on the card delivered the fight of the night.

Lightweights Bart Palaszewski and Chris Horodecki traded shots throughout in a back-and-forth mixed martial arts affair that appeared to be on the table in the fight's closing minutes.

Horodecki, 19, got the best of the more experienced Palaszewski, taking a split-decision win before an announced crowd of 4,531 in the IFL's first show in Texas.

In the card's super fight, Matt Lindland overwhelmed Carlos Newton.

Lindland outwrestled the former UFC champion in the first round and came out landing bombs in the second before finishing off Newton with a guillotine choke later in the round.
