CFL Eskimo Mike Maurer defeated in MFC mixed martial arts bout in Edmonton

EDMONTON (CP) - The Wolverine got waxed.

Edmonton Eskimo Mike Maurer lasted just 36 seconds into his mixed martial arts bout Saturday before he was knocked out with a brutal one-two punch to the head by Roger Hollet of Halifax.

The 31-year-old Maurer, who fights under the name Wolverine, took a roundhouse kick to the head from Hollett, dazing him and setting him up for the flurry of punches that dropped him like a stone to the canvas.

Hollett said he had seen tape of Maurer and knew the CFL fullback tended to keep his hands too low in front of him.

He said Maurer did it again in the light heavyweight bout in Maximum Fighting Championship 11: Gridiron at the Shaw Conference Centre and said "I connected a bit."

The fans packing the Shaw Conference Centre knew it too.

"Keep your hands up, Mike!" someone shouted before Hollett launched the kick.
