Herb Dean, Making The Tough Call



For those of you who are considering becoming a mixed martial arts referee, you might want to contact Herb Dean to find out how much fun it actually is. Herb Dean has been under scrutiny quite a few times and he often finds himself in the middle of unusual situations.

At UFC 48, Frank Mir had a tight arm bar on Tim Sylvia, but in the middle of Mir extending his hips to secure it even tighter, Herb Dean stepped in. There was not a tap, but there was a break in Sylvia’s forearm that nobody except Herb Dean saw. That stoppage may have saved Tim Sylvia’s career. At UFC 63, the anticipated rematch between Ken Shamrock and Tito Ortiz had come to a peak, only to be halted in the first round by a stoppage from Herb Dean. Many people feel that Shamrock was still able to defend himself, but Herb Dean thought otherwise.
