Ultimate Fighting Seeks Legal Status

Ultimate Fighting is an extremely popular sport, a mix of different types of martial arts. It's illegal in the state of Tennessee, but some advocates are hoping to lift the ban and save the sport's reputation.

Roughness, contact, and tackles personify the American pastime of football, but throw some of that roughness into a ring and you're breaking the law in the state of Tennessee.

Ultimate Fighting was once a no rules street fighting sport that has now turned into a highly regulated and very popular mixed martial arts discipline. Its viewer numbers rival those of boxing and many major sports.

"The sooner people realize it is a sport and not some barroom brawl or some stroking contest because I'm mad at the other guy, the better off they'll be," ultimate fighter Josh Schockman said.
