Ayuyu debuts in MMA fight in Italy

By Mark D. Watson

Thanks to Patrick Ayuyu, Guam made its mixed martial arts debut in the New Generation Tournament II, March 25, at the Palazzarro di Griggiano in Milano, Italy. Ayuyu defeated England's Andy Miller of TeamBoardmanMMA. Ayuyu won via referee stoppage 2 minutes and 15 seconds into the first round of the main event. Since his last appearance on Guam in Fury 6:Undisputed, Ayuyu has been training MMA in Japan.

Next up, Ayuyu is scheduling his debut into K-1:Heros -- one of the world's premier MMA productions -- later this year.

Other Fury MMA veterans Melvin Manibusan, Kelvin Fitial, and George Sotiropolous will be competing in Spirit MC11, April 22 in Seoul, Korea.

As part of an ongoing project in building athletic bridges to Korea -- through Fury MMA's affiliation with spirit Martial Challenge -- the fights will be broadcasted throughout Korea in May. The participation will mark Fury MMA's second appearance in Korea after Melchor Manibusan and Terrence Aflague's appearance in Spirit MC10 in October 2006.

In other MMA news, brothers Ian and Isaac Lujan will be competing in the youth division of Grappler's Quest, April 14. On the same day the Shoyoroll 2nd Annual All-Island Brazilian Jiujitsu tournament will be held on Guam.

Saipan most recently held the inaugural All-Island Submission Grappling Tournament on March 30 at the Roundhouse. Contact Cuki Alvarez at 888-8327, for more details.
