Din Thomas Arrested For Illegal PSL Matches! - 30 Oct 2007 09:49:28pm Posted: 30 Oct 2007 04:49 PM CDT By Will Greenlee PORT ST. LUCIE — Din Thomas, almost a legend in the ultimate fighting world, was arrested Tuesday after police say he ran "illegal cage fighting" matches at a local training studio that he runs, a police spokesman said. Thomas, 31, faces a felony prohibited competitions charge after police got a tip Oct. 19 about the matches at a facility he uses in St. Lucie West. Inside, they observed two men fighting in an octagon-shaped ring surrounded by about 150 spectators. The fights reportedly weren't sanctioned. Thomas is well known in the world of ultimate fighting, commonly known as mixed martial arts, a brutal combination of boxing, kickboxing and wrestling in a boxing ring or cage. The fighting is so intense that most fights are limited to three five-minute rounds. Thomas, who lost last month to Kenny Florian in an Ultimate Fighting Championship match televised live on Spike TV, has a gym on South U.S. 1 near Port St. Lucie Boulevard. It's named American Top Team Port St. Lucie (ATTPSL) because of an affiliation with American Top Team, a national organization with franchises across the country. A Delaware native, Thomas was 12 when he moved with his family to Port St. Lucie, graduating from Port St. Lucie High School in 1994. Here is the warrant: Click Here Source: www.tcpalm.com

ART OF WAR 4 Delivers Another Great Night of "Mississippi Mayhem" - 30 Oct 2007 08:00:30pm Posted: 30 Oct 2007 03:00 PM CDT DALLAS, TX--(Marketwire - October 30, 2007) - SUN Sports & Entertainment Inc. (PINKSHEETS: SSPE) announced today the ART OF WAR 4 "Mississippi Mayhem" played to a nearly sold-out crowd of 2,400 fans on Saturday, October 27th at Harrah's Grand Tunica Casino & Resort and delivered eight action-packed bouts that all ended before going to the scorecards. MIKE WESSEL, strength and conditioning coach for the Arkansas Razorbacks, was not the favorite going into his heavyweight main event contest against Memphis native MATT THOMAS. Wessel had only eight months of training and carried a 2-1 record against Thomas, who held a 3-3 record against some tough competition. In the opening seconds of the bout, Wessel's standup proved to be tighter than his opponent's and he opened a cut on Thomas's head. Eventually Thomas shot in for a takedown and had Wessel in a bad position dropping punches and elbows. Just before the two-minute mark, Wessel showed an incredible amount of strength by reversing his position and dropping bombs of his own. The two big men briefly got back to their feet, but Wessel kept the pressure and unleashed a flurry of shots before the ref called the bout at 2:42 in the first round. Wessel walked off with the ART OF WAR Quickest Knockout Award. In a battle between undefeated super heavyweights, SHANE CARWIN tested his 6-0 record against REX RICHARDS (4-0). At the weigh-ins, Carwin could have made heavyweight tipping the scales at just 266 pounds. Richards, on the other hand, looked leaner but weighed in a whopping 312 pounds. Both men stood toe to toe for just seconds before Carwin shot in, took Richards down and had him in the mount position. The Colorado native pounded on Richards who flailed away trying to escape. Remarkably Richards was able to get back to his feet, but Carwin capitalized by sinking in a tight guillotine choke. With blood streaming from Richards nose, the bigger man tapped out at 1:24 into the first stanza. Both men intend to drop to heavyweight, and with Carwin's undefeated record unblemished, he will no doubt have big opportunities in his future. (Continue Reading)

Strikeforce Updates - 30 Oct 2007 12:27:46pm Posted: 30 Oct 2007 07:27 AM CDT
- The 9/29 show at the Playboy Mansion drew a crowd of 500 at $1,000 a ticket for a $500,000 gate. The event was considered a huge success. For 2008 they are planning two major shows in San Jose, another show at the Playboy Mansion, and expansion into several new markets including Honolulu and Seattle.
- The San Jose shows are slated to feature Frank Shamrock v. Renzo Graice in April and Shamrock v. Cung Le later in the year. Both events would be co-promoted with EliteXC and Showtime as pay-per-view events, even though EXC and Strikeforce aren't on the best of terms.
- The promotion is making a strong play for Bob Sapp, planning to build towards Sapp v. Daniel Pruder in Hawaii where there is no athletic commission to stop the fight due to the weight difference. Outside of the UFC, every other major promotion in the country has interest in Sapp, including EXC who has discussed Sapp v. Butterbean, but the EXC offer is not as lucrative as Strikeforce's offer.
- They recently received approval from the CSAC to bring back the one night, four-man tournament format. All fights will be two, five-minute rounds with a three-minute overtime period in the event of a draw.

Matt Hughes: My Thoughts on Randy Couture. - 30 Oct 2007 12:20:37pm Posted: 30 Oct 2007 07:20 AM CDT By Matt Hughes Well I've been tapering off of farm work and training more and more now that the fight's getting closer, but I know you all have been waiting to hear my thoughts on Randy leaving the UFC, so here we go. I don't know exactly what is going through Randy's head, I haven't talked to him, nor have I talked to Dana White about this situation. However, I somewhat agree with Randy. A couple of years ago, the UFC was a much smaller organization and I knew everybody that worked for them. When I wanted something, I knew who to call and who would get it done. I miss that. Nowadays, it seems like new employees of the UFC call me everyday. The problem was they got so big so fast they had to get more workers. So now it's just a much bigger organization and things are a lot different. Dana doesn't know all that goes on over there. It seems like he's off doing his own thing. So I'm sure that a lot of what Randy is mad about, Dana has nothing to do with. A lot of times the UFC will call me up and ask me to do things. If my schedule's busy or I don't want to do it, I just say no. If Dana White calls me up and asks me to do something I always do it. And if I need something done at the UFC, I know I can always call Dana. I don't know if Randy is done fighting, I don't know if he's wanting to go out and fight for another organization. At first, I heard money was the reason Randy quit and then I heard it wasn't, so there is a lot of things that I just don't know; but Dana is holding a press conference tomorrow, so maybe we'll find out more about it then. I've also heard that Randy did this because he wants to fight Fedor Emelianenko. Right now Randy's stock in this sport is pretty high, so if he is wanting to go out with a bang then what's left for him? Nothing, but maybe Fedor. -Matt

World Kickboxing Champion Set For MMA Debut - 30 Oct 2007 11:56:48am Posted: 30 Oct 2007 06:56 AM CDT Undefeated World Light Heavyweight Kickboxing Champion Brian "The Mad Stork" Schwartz (18-0) will step in the cage for the first time in his 16-year professional fighting career to face Lemont Davis (8-4) in a 175 lb. limit matchup during the Strikeforce "Four Men Enter, One Man Survives" mixed martial arts mega-card at San Jose's HP Pavilion on Friday, November 16th. "I'm really loving training right now, which is good, because, at the end of my (kickboxing) career, I was a little burnt out and wasn't training like I should. Since I've been back, though, I just got that fire again," said the 33-year-old Schwartz, who originally closed the book on his fight career after stopping New York's Michael Corleone in the fifth round of their kickboxing matchup in San Jose on October 21, 2005. According to the 6 foot 3 inch Foster City, California native, it was watching a number of young mixed martial arts contenders at work in Schwartz's new Undisputed Boxing Gym that inspired him to take on a new challenge in the world's fastest growing sport. "I'm training hard in the gym and my road work has been really good," he said. "Everything it should be like when you train is happening for me right now." (Continue Reading)

JZ values his place in the American rankings - 30 Oct 2007 02:38:58am Posted: 29 Oct 2007 09:38 PM CDT Twice K-1 Hero's champion, Gesias Cavalcanti appeared only at sixth place in the American ranking of the 70 kg category. "At least, at this time, I appeared in their ranking (laugh) ", said Gesias, which valued Wh he is behind names like the Japanese Takanori Gomi (1), Hayato Sakurai (2), Gilbert Melendez (3), Tatsuya Kawajiri (4) and Shinya Aoki (5). "They have more time then me fighting in a great event that was the Pride, which had a bigger exhibition in world-wide level. Of course they deserve, because for me this is the most difficult category to made a ranking. Between the top 10, any one can alternate at the post of number 1", said the black-belt of the ATT, which complemented: "Perhaps for the American ranking a big part of them could not have seen my bouts. They value more for the numbers of top fighters that I have fought. Then, to reach the forst position, I have only to fight and to keep winning", said Gesias, still on holidays at Rio de Janeiro . Another Brazilian at the ranking is the champion of the Cage Rage VÃtor Shaolin, who in despite of the defeat for Gesias appears at seventh place. Source: www.tatame.com

CSAC Under Fire & Scrambling Due To New Era Lawsuit - 30 Oct 2007 02:28:13am Posted: 29 Oct 2007 09:28 PM CDT SANTA ANA, California (October 29, 2007) • After being named in a lawsuit filed by New Era Fighting (NEF) for $500,000,000, embattled California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) Executive Director Armando Garcia responded by announcing a review of NEF's promotional licensing renewal, incredibly, 10 months after the CSAC cashed NEF's check for its 2007-2008 promoter's license, and two weeks after a legal claim had been delivered to the State. NEF President Ron Kort filed the lawsuit because of a pattern and practice by the California State Athletic Commission of intentionally, willfully and viciously interfering with a licensed and approved event, which effected and injured New Era Fighting in the same or similar fashion as other mixed martial arts promoters, managers and fighters. The California State Athletic Commission, Frank Munoz (CSAC Staff Services Analyst), and the State's Department of Consumer Affairs were also named in the lawsuit, which is the result of the CSAC's cease and desist order, issued only minutes prior to and forcing the cancellation of NEF's much publicized scheduled tryouts on July 19 in Montebello (CA). The CSAC claimed NEF President Ron Kort wasn't a licensed promoter despite having approved his application, awarding him a promoter's license, and cashing his renewal check for 2007 (copies available upon request). Gabriel Gonzaga vs Werdum in 2008 - 30 Oct 2007 02:18:47am Posted: 29 Oct 2007 09:18 PM CDT The Carioca Gabriel "Napao" GOnzaga finally shall have a chance to avenge his knockout loss to Fabricio Werdum in Jungle Fight 1, in September, 2003. Marco Alvan, leader of Team Link confirmed today exclusively to GRACIEMAG.com that the battle between the black belts will take place in January, at UFC 80, in Newcastle, England. Napao is recovering from a fractured nose, suffered during his loss to Randy Couture, in August. Werdum, though, has been training hard with his new team, Chute Boxe, since his loss to the Belarusian Andrei Arlovski in April. "They fought at different times, Napao was 10kg lighter and was not originally on the card. The fight was offered to him at the last moment and they said there was a change in adversary and it would be Werdum. The two have progressed a lot and have what it takes to put on a great fight. Napao thinks the first fight was good and that this one will be even better. He accepted the proposal the minute it was offered," declared Alvan. Source: www.graciemag.com

Alvan Talks About Team Link - 30 Oct 2007 02:15:49am Posted: 29 Oct 2007 09:15 PM CDT With the growing popularity of MMA and the transformation of the United States into the greatest center for worldwide MMA, new teams have popped up in the land of Uncle Sam. One of them has been growing a lot in recent months and there it has a very Brazilian face. Team Link, which already includes Gabriel Napao and Paulao Filho, was announced last week with a new home for the undefeated UFC fighter Thiago Silva, although the black belt leader of the team Marco Alvan cleared up the story to GRACIEMAG.com: "We didn't say Thiago would be only our athlete that was a mistake. I immediately called up Macaco to clear things up. Thiago can come any time he wants to train with us and swap experiences, however, he will defend the flag of Macaco Gold Team. When I called Jorge (Patino, "Macaco"), he told me Thiago would fight for Macaco, Chute Boxe and Team Link and I was stoked. Macaco is my friend and I will soon put him in a big event here." The phase the team is going through is so good that the team's other fighters having been doing well in smaller events. In the EFI, Nate Woodger, Gabriel Gladiador and the Armenian Karn Grigorian won their fights, the latter winning the 205lb title. Another student to stand out is the promising Ricardo Funch, who is undefeated with four wins and will fight again on the 1st of December for the WFL title. "We are not going to stop reinforcing ourselves, in December one more world champion will join our team. We are 100% Jiu-Jitsu and already have six black belts, besides all these tough kids arriving here. The market here in the United States blew up and will grow more still. There is an MMA event every week," declared Alvan. Source: www.graciemag.com

Brock Lesnar: “This Isn’t a Joke For Me.” - 30 Oct 2007 02:06:39am Posted: 29 Oct 2007 09:06 PM CDT By David L. Hudson, Jr. Many gifted athletes have failed when attempting to transition from their sport to another. Reynaldo "Skeets" Nehemiah dominated the 110 meter high hurdles in track & field but failed to make an impression as a receiver for the San Francisco 49ers. "His Airness," Michael Jordan became a cultural icon and basketball legend for the Chicago Bulls but struck out in his attempt at Major League Baseball. The great Althea Gibson dominated the tennis world in the late 1950s, winning U.S. Open and Wimbledon titles, but she failed to win a single LPGA event when she tried her hand at professional golf. Ed "Too Tall" Jones terrified NFL quarterbacks with his speed and agility and 6-9' frame, but his experiment with boxing sent him back to the NFL. Former WWE pro wrestling superstar Brock Lesnar insists that his transition to mixed martial arts will be different. "I want to try to prove to myself and the fighting world that, yes, Brock Lesnar can be a serious force in mixed martial arts," said Lesnar, who recently signed a contract with the UFC. "This isn't a joke for me. I am spending countless hours in the gym." Critics may scoff that someone from the "fake" world of professional wrestling would even think they could compete with the best conditioned athletes in the world. But, Lesnar and UFC head Dana White think that the former pro wrestler can compete and do well. When asked why he would leave the lucrative paydays of preordained outcomes for the ultimate challenge in the "Octagon" of the UFC, Lesnar responds: "Pride and dignity." (Continue Reading)

Hieron gets a new opponent for the Grand Prix - 30 Oct 2007 01:59:03am Posted: 29 Oct 2007 08:59 PM CDT By Chris Yucus Only five days out from show time, Jay Hieron (12-4, 4-2 IFL) has learned he will face a new opponent in the opening bracket of the International Fight League World Grand Prix this Saturday at the Sears Centre in Chicago. Hieron, who was slated to face Patrick Healy, will now be tested against Donnie Liles (8-3, 1-1 IFL) in the tournament's first leg to crown a welterweight champion. Healy (18-12, 2-1 IFL) was forced to withdraw from the bout due to a hyper-extended elbow. "It's the fight game; stuff like this happens," said Hieron. "I'm ready to go no matter who is standing in front of me." Liles is Hieron's third opponent switch since being named to the Grand Prix in August. Original opponent Mark Miller also withdrew with an injury; Hieron said he was told Saturday he'd be facing Gideon Ray after Healy dropped out, as well. Ray faces Brazilian acrobat Delson Heleno in the other welterweight bracket, the winners converging in the finals Saturday, Dec. 29 at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn. (Continue Reading)

Yves Edwards and Antonio Silva at Elite XC "Renegade" - 30 Oct 2007 01:44:19am Posted: 29 Oct 2007 08:44 PM CDT By Brian Knapp Yves Edwards and Antonio Silva will compete at EliteXC "Renegade" Saturday, Nov. 10 at the America Bank Center in Corpus Christi, Texas, sources close to the American Top Team have confirmed. Edwards (29-13-1) will meet Moses Baca (2-2); Silva (8-1), meanwhile, will collide with Jonathan Wiezorek (11-1). Known for his lanky build and savvy striking game, Edwards put together a seven-fight win streak in 2004, which included a split decision win over Hermes Franca at UFC 47 and a highlight reel head kick knockout of Josh Thomson at UFC 49. The 31-year-old hit a speed bump in 2005, though, and has lost three in a row and five out of six. Edwards last competed in July when he lost to Jorge Masvidal by knockout under the Bodog Fight banner. The two are now teammates at ATT. Silva, meanwhile, underwent surgery in June to remove a tumor from his cranial region. Nicknamed "Bigfoot" for his 6-foot-4, near 300-pound frame, Silva was originally slated to face Wiezorek at K-1 "Dynamite!! USA" June 2 in Los Angeles. According to ATT representatives, the California State Athletic Commission refused to grant Silva medical clearance for the bout due to the tumor. The Brazilian defeated Wesley Correira by first-round TKO at EliteXC "Destiny" in February. All eight of his victories have come by stoppage, seven of them by KO or TKO. |
