Ken Shamrock: "Dana White Wants To Be The Guy!" - 05 Nov 2007 11:41:10pm Posted: 05 Nov 2007 05:41 PM CST By Percy Crawford UFC Hall of Famer and MMA veteran Ken Shamrock talks about how open tryout have been going for IFL team and shares his thoughts on Randy Couture's resignation from the UFC as well as his own dealings with UFC management and much more. You don't want to miss it! PC: Were you surprised at the way Randy Couture left the UFC? KS: Yeah! I was more surprised not at the way Randy left the UFC, but they did that so quickly after what they did to me. It's almost like they feel like no one can touch them. They have this Mike Tyson syndrome that they could do whatever they want. It really did surprise me that they did it that soon after they did it to me. Now, what they've done is basically open everyone's eyes because with me, it was kind of subtle and people were kind of upset it happened, but they just figured it was just another professional athlete that got a problem in the office and things just didn't work out and now he's gone. I expressed my feelings a little bit about what they did to me, but it didn't have the impact that it does now that they've did it to another superstar. The disrespect that that they done to me went unnoticed, but now that it's happened to Randy, it's almost amplified on what they've done; which is good for me. With one person saying it, people listen obviously, but not with the effect of them doing it to another person so quickly after. It just kind of reinforces what I was saying that they did to me because they did it to me. It just kind of shocked me that they would be that stupid to do something to Randy that they did to me so closely to when they did it to me. PC: I saw a comment you made about no UFC Hall of Famers being involved with the company anymore and I never thought about that before. Can you elaborate on that some more? KS: It's almost like they want to erase the history. They don't want anything to do with Bob Meyrowitz and the people that helped create the UFC. It wasn't Zuffa or Dana White. It was Bob Meyrowitz that came in and did the production and started this thing. It's almost like they want to erase the history of everything that ever happened prior to that. They came in and did the Hall of Fame, but it was almost like they inducted people into the Hall of Fame, but then they just dropped it. It was almost like a way to just push everything away. It was like here you go and then bye! It just doesn't make any sense to me because in any sports history Hall of Fame or just retired, they all have guys that are involved in some part of the production that gives people comfortable history of their sport. The UFC has erased anything with anybody from the past. Boxing does it with George Foreman, Lennox Lewis and Sugar Ray Leonard. These guys are involved with production one way or another because they built the sport. The UFC don't do that. It's like Dana White wants to be the guy. He doesn't want the Hall of Famer getting in there and getting all of the attention; he wants that. It's a scary thought when you look at it like none of the Hall of Famers are involved with the UFC. People that have fattened their pockets are basically being kicked to the curb. It's like, "we're done with you and enjoy your life because this is ours and just because you got out there and got your nose broke, bled and sweated for us, we don't need you anymore." "The Machine" Running Steady - 05 Nov 2007 11:00:33pm Posted: 05 Nov 2007 05:00 PM CST By Mike Russell Thamesford, Ontario native Mark Hominick revealed this week that he is slated to fight on a World Extreme Cagefighting card in February. Although no challenger has been named, Josh Grispi (9-1), South Shore Sport Fighting teammate of Alex Karalexis, has been mentioned as a possible opponent for Hominick, who has two fights remaining on his WEC contract. "I'm pretty eager to get back in there," Hominick said. "I was back in the gym right away after my last [TKO] fight. I've just got the hunger to get back in the ring. My next fight with the WEC will be in February. I'm back on track, and I'm ready to get back in there and hunt for [the WEC featherweight] title, as well." In the meantime, the former TKO featherweight champion will compete next at TKO 31 "Young Guns" on Friday, Dec. 14 at the Bell Centre in Montreal. No opponent has been named for Hominick (14-7). Taking time out of his busy teaching schedule at Tompkins Muay Thai and Submission in London, Ontario, Hominick left for Chicago over the weekend to help his good friend and training partner Jeff Curran prepare for his upcoming December WEC title match against Urijah Faber. Although he covets Faber's belt, Hominick said that, should Curran win the title, he would never stand across the Octagon from him, no matter the reward. (Continue Reading)

Patrick Cote NOT On UFC 80 Card - 05 Nov 2007 10:47:55pm Posted: 05 Nov 2007 04:47 PM CST By Mike Russell Unsubstantiated reports circulated over the weekend that Canadian middleweight Patrick Cote had announced he would be returning to the UFC in January 2008. Not so, according to Cote. The Rimouski, Quebec native told TGFN a statement on his Facebook page was taken out of context. Cote said he was only scheduled to appear at UFC 80 if it was held in Canada; the January event has since been moved. Since he was not invited to fight at the replacement show Saturday, Jan. 19 in Newcastle, England, "The Predator" speculated he might be invited to compete on the next card, slated for Saturday, Feb. 2 in Las Vegas. "I don't know who said [I'd be fighting at UFC 80], but I said that I will probably be fighting in February," Cote said. "I was supposed to fight in January, and now I'm not, then they say I'm going to fight at UFC 81 on Super Bowl weekend. F—k, I didn't say anything like that. I don't know yet when I'm fighting. Maybe I'll get a call now next week." Cote (11-4) – who upset Kendall Grove, middleweight winner on season three of "The Ultimate Fighter," in August – said the UFC might be making its long-awaited Canadian debut in April, though a date has not been set.

Through the Past Darkly: IFL Grand Prix - 05 Nov 2007 10:42:55pm Posted: 05 Nov 2007 04:42 PM CST By Ben Fowlkes I'll admit it: I really didn't believe there was any way the rematch between Bart Palaszewski and Chris Horodecki could live up to the expectations after their first meeting. It just seemed unreasonable. But midway into the second round, after Horodecki had again been stunned by a punch and had fought his way out of another standing guillotine (this time without slipping through the ropes), I knew I was wrong. Palaszewski was once more unhappy with the decision and made it very clear in the post-fight press conference. "I have no idea what I could have done to win a decision against Chris," he said. "He looks like he was in a car wreck and I look fine." And while it's easy to understand Palaszewski's frustration, I have to admit that it looked as though Horodecki outworked him in the fight and showed tremendous heart in the process. I've always been struck by how calm Horodecki looks in his fights, but when he gets hit a few times that look changes. Then he gets mad, and that's when things get really interesting. One thing that might have helped Horodecki stay under control, however, is his unique pre-fight routine. According to one IFL employee who witnessed this visualization/ guided meditation session, which he described to me as "some weird Mr. Miagi stuff", it's intended to connect the two halves of the brain and release serotonin and adrenaline before going to the ring. Whether it really works or not is up for debate, but you can't argue with the results so far. (Continue Reading)

Return of "The Punisher" - 05 Nov 2007 10:04:49pm Posted: 05 Nov 2007 04:04 PM CST By Kelly Thomas Riding an eight fight win-streak going into the Rashad Evans fight, September of last '06, Jason Lambert looked to have the opportunity to earn a few fans with a win over another Ultimate Fighter alum. The athletic Rob MacDonald being the first, succumbing in just a couple minutes into the first round. Obviously things have a way of working out a little different than what you hope. Rashad would eventually get mount and pound out the Punisher. That win-streak, with fighters like IFL standout Matt Horwich, MacDonald, Brandon Lee Hinkle, thunder-handed Terry Martin and journeymen Travis Wiuff and Marvin Eastman on it, counted for very little after the loss. It was time to regroup. Lambert would have to make it a hasty regrouping because it was not too long before the UFC called with another match-up. It wasn't a `gimme' to help Lambert get on track though, not at all. How about "Babalu" Sobral after, as if that wouldn't be tough enough, losing to Chuck Liddell and, presumably, wanting to get that taste out of his mouth? Many guys would have shied away at this prospect but we're talking about a guy who fights at 205lbs but probably could make middleweight and has fought heavyweights before, including UFC heavyweights like "Cabbage" Correira and Tim Sylvia. Lambert went for it. (Continue Reading)

BJ Penn: "I'm expecting a good fight" - 05 Nov 2007 05:51:43pm Posted: 05 Nov 2007 11:51 AM CST By Dayton Morinaga Interim or not, Hilo's BJ Penn is ready to chase a shot at mixed martial arts history. Even if it means chasing it a long way from home. Penn confirmed Saturday night that he will face California's Joe Stevenson for the interim lightweight world championship of the Ultimate Fighting Championship organization in January. The bout for the top prize in the UFC's 155-pound division is scheduled for Jan. 19 at Newcastle, England. It will be the main event of the UFC 80 card. "I was training hard all this time, but it was tough to get motivated not knowing what was going on," Penn said. "At least now I know I have to get ready for Stevenson if I want that belt." Penn, 28, will be attempting to become the second MMA athlete to win a UFC world championship in two different weight classes. He held the welterweight (170 pounds) title in 2004. Randy Couture — who won the light-heavyweight and heavyweight titles — is the only other athlete to win UFC world championships in two different divisions. Penn is 11-4-1, and coming off a convincing submission victory over Jens Pulver in June. He is the only MMA athlete from Hawai'i to win a UFC world championship. Stevenson is 32-7, including 5-1 in UFC bouts. "Stevenson is good all-around," Penn said. "He'll come in shape, so I have to be at my best. I'm expecting a good fight." Stevenson earned a UFC contract by winning The Ultimate Fighter 2 reality television series two years ago. "He deserves a shot," Penn said. "I have nothing bad to say about the guy." The website covers all fighting styles including women's MMA, boxing, kickboxing, Karate and Muay Thai and is the only site that serves as a one-stop-shop for women fighters. Other websites devoted to women in martial arts offer only chat rooms, though claim to offer more. For Wfighter.com, several professional women fighters have agreed to provide weekly blogs. Staff writers will interview experts on the latest trends, gear, training techniques and also provide profiles on top women fighters and trainers. The site will also offer a forum, photo gallery, school directory, a calendar of upcoming events, social networking and even allow promoters to post fighting opportunities. Fighters can set up profiles with photos, stats and contact info, and future plans include an addition of a pro shop selling gloves, wraps, protective equipment and fighting apparel. "As a female fighter myself, I know we face unique challenges," said Lisa King, co-founder of the website. "We're finally getting to the point where women are accepted and taken seriously in these sports. This site will provide them a true community - a way to connect and network." Feisty Cotto to defend title - 05 Nov 2007 03:29:23pm Posted: 05 Nov 2007 09:29 AM CST By Santos A. Perez One of boxing's weapons to combat the knocks it receives from sports rival mixed martial arts are Miguel Cotto's plans to remain true to form in his highly anticipated fight Saturday night. Cotto's penchant for ring aggression, and to some critics, a dosage of rule-breaking measures, has crafted an unbeaten career and world titles in two weight classes. The Puerto Rico native will seek a similar approach when he defends his World Boxing Association welterweight title against Shane Mosley at Madison Square Garden in New York . ''People like to see me go after guys,'' Cotto said in a conference call last week. ``That's the way I fight. That's the way everyone enjoys the fight. And I will always do that.'' Already popular in Puerto Rico, Cotto (30-0, 25 KOs) now has crossed another threshold of boxing stardom. The bout against Mosley will be his second successive pay-per-view event, following an 11th-round technical knockout win over Zab Judah in June. But with the impressive knockout-to-victory ratio comes attacks from rivals who say Cotto sometimes deviates from Marques of Queensbury rules. In a brutal victory over Judah, Cotto twice was warned for hitting below the belt, the second infraction causing a brief delay that allowed Judah to recuperate. ''This is a fight, this is professional fighting,'' Cotto said. ``You do what you have to do to win and so things that happen in the ring are going to happen.'' (Continue Reading)

The CSAC's Poor Judgment - 05 Nov 2007 12:17:59pm Posted: 05 Nov 2007 06:17 AM CST By Leland Roling Last week, the California State Athletic Commission played a big part in the future of MMA in the next few months. Sean Sherk's case was delayed another two weeks, Phil Baroni had his sentence only reduced even though he had a plethora of evidence pleading his innocence, and the CSAC's poor judgement and bad procedures has caused a magnifying glass to be placed on their appeals board. We will take a scrutinizing look at the CSAC, their history of decisions, background of their board, and the overall structure of the organization in this week's edition of MMA Analytics. Throughout this week, I have been chronicling the California State Athletic Commission's vast history of poor decision making, unprofessional behavior, and poor administrative support. In this week's edition of MMA Analytics, I hope to give everyone an inside look at an athletic commission that seems to need a change, a big change. From inexperience commissioners on the board to a horrible appeal system, the CSAC is on the verge of hitting a huge roadblock, an attack on their credibility. Let's take a hard-nosed look inside the CSAC. Commissioners lack experience The commissioners on the board of appeals at the CSAC are the sole group of people that decide the fate of each fighter when there is an appeal process. If a fighter wants to appeal a decision and present a case to the board, these are the people who ultimately decide the livelihood of a fighter. What happens when you have a few people who seem to either give a fighter a chance no matter what the circumstance, but then give honesty the cold shoulder? You have the makings of a commission that cannot consistently make the right decision. (Continue Reading)

Next up for Marquez: Pacquiao - 05 Nov 2007 08:18:35am Posted: 05 Nov 2007 02:18 AM CST "I want a fight with Manny Pacquiao," asserted Marquez. In 2004, the two fought to a controversial stalemate—now Marquez feels the time is right for a rematch. Marquez stated for the record, in English, "I know that Manny Pacquiao said 'I am Mexican killer.' He hasn't proved it. He hasn't proved me." Promoter Oscar De La Hoya feels that this is a fight that boxing needs right now. "If you want to be called the best at 130 pounds, you have to go through Marquez," said De La Hoya. "It's a match-up that the whole world wants to watch. It's a match-up that has to happen." Fortunately for fight fans, this fight looks to be inevitable. Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaffer, relayed: "Both Bob Arum and I, we already met and we talked about this fight, in case Juan Manuel Marquez did win. We have the date reserved, which is March 15th, of next year. I will be with Bob next week in New York for the Mosley-Cotto fight and I will have further discussions and negotiations with him. "I hope that within the next couple of weeks, we can put that fight together." (Read More)
