Mike Pyle Is Ready To Go - 08 Nov 2007 07:20:07am Posted: 08 Nov 2007 01:20 AM CST (Mike Pyle & Coach Ron Frazier work the mits) Mike Pyle is in Corpus Christi, Texas ready to take on Jake Shields in the co-Main Event of the Elite XC card on Showtime. Mike had an incredible training camp, looks sharp and is ready to make his name known. If you're unfamiliar with Quicksand Pyle, he's well versed in Jiu Jitsu and Muay Thai. Mike taught himself how to fight as a teenager in Tennesse. He put mats in his mom's shed and taught himself jiu jitsu while beating up his buddies (who he bribed with beer) and watching tapes. He is a consummate competitor who never backs down from a challenge. He fought Quinton Jackson at the beginning of his career in a fight many people feel could have been judged his way, he took on Andrei Semenov in Russia, beat Jon Fitch and Shonie Carter, held the WEC Welterweight Title and competed in the IFL at 185lbs a weight class above his fighting weight. If he and Jake Shields had been promoted better, this fight could be headlining one of the biggest Pay Per Views of the year. On paper it has FIGHT OF THE YEAR CANDIDATE written on it in big, bold letters. Maybe in a way, it works out for fans that they get to see it for free Saturday. Both Mike and Jake are class acts and great fighters. Jake may have an advantage in jiu jitsu (but not by much), Mike has the advantage standing and may have an edge in wrestling. Expect a tremendous bout when they step in the cage with lots of takedowns, submission attempts, reversals and scrambles. Basically expect it to look like a Tyson Griffin fight. Elite XC airs this Saturday at 10pm ET/PT. Source: xtremecouture.wordpress.com

Marcelo Garcia Has His Eye On The Super Grappling Challenge - 08 Nov 2007 06:53:00am Posted: 08 Nov 2007 12:53 AM CST Black belt may fight in absolute Submission Wrestling tournament The Super Challenge Grappling event is investing heavily in the mission of promoting the biggest submission grappling event in history. In doing so, they have recruited a team of first-rate tough guys. Their next target is none other than Marcelinho Garcia. Away from MMA till the end of the year, due to the cut suffered in his K-1 Hero's debut, Marcelinho is seriously considering the possibility of entering the dispute. According to Fabio Gurgel, the athlete's coach, the tournament would serve to keep Garcia in competition rhythm while awaiting his next commitment in the ring next year. In practice it would be an opportunity for Marcelinho to try and win the absolute title that escaped him at the ADCC. "Marcelinho wants to focus on MMA, but he'll only be back in the ring next year. That's why I think it's important he participate in Super Challenge Grappling, which will be a big event. After the MTL final, on the coming 10th, I'll take off for New York to talk to him about participating in the event," reveals Fabio Gurgel, further revealing that it will all depend on the scarring process of the cut, which took more than 100 stitches both internally and externally. Black House Going Strong - 08 Nov 2007 06:45:10am Posted: 08 Nov 2007 12:45 AM CST Carlao Barreto speaks on future of team with new home base News Black House would be nearing its end reached Carlao Barreto's ears. Put off, the team's leader spoke to GRACIEMAG.com to shed light on the situation at the team he considers the greatest MMA team in Brazil. "The news being spread around in the press is wrong, when you say something to the public it has to be done responsibly. The only people that can talk in respect to Black House is me and Joinha. What happened was that we left X-Gym, in Recreio, and moved to MaxFit, the No Gi center, in Meier. The reason was simple, the team grew a lot and started to get in the way of the normal gym, so each went their separate ways, after the end of the administrative contract, in the friendliest way possible," said Carlao. "At the new gym we have all the infrastructure we need for a big team like ours: doctors, physical trainers, nutritionists, orthomolecular treatment, transportation of athletes. We just changed locations, but the team's the same. Everyone still trains together, including Lyoto Machida and Anderson Silva," he continued. (Continue Reading)

Sam Stout Has Not Signed To Fight Per Eklund - 08 Nov 2007 03:52:41am Posted: 07 Nov 2007 09:52 PM CST By Brian Knapp Sam "Hands of Stone" Stout has not been informed of a reported match-up with Swedish standout Per Eklund at UFC 80 "Rapid Fire," scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 19 at the Metro Arena in Newcastle, England. Sherdog.com reported this week that Ecklund had already accepted the lightweight bout. "I haven't heard anything from my manager yet, so I can't confirm anything until I do," Stout said. "I just read about it on the Internet myself." Stout (12-3-1) defeated Martin Grandmont by first-round KO at TKO 30 "Apocalypse" last month in Montreal, Quebec and lost a gutsy stand-up war of attrition in his rematch with Spencer Fisher at UFC Fight Night last June in Hollywood, Fla. UFC president Dana White has said he would like to promote the Stout-Fisher rubber match at a future date. Stout, the TKO lightweight champion, holds a 1-2 record in the UFC, a loss to Kenny Florian included. (Continue Reading)

Pavlik Requires 100 Stitches - 08 Nov 2007 03:07:28am Posted: 07 Nov 2007 09:07 PM CST By Joseph Santoliquito World middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik will have to rearrange his plans this weekend—and the possible February 16, 2008 date for his rematch with Jermain Taylor. The Ring has learned that Pavlik, who was scheduled to arrive in New York City Wednesday for this weekend's Miguel Cotto-Shane Mosley showdown at Madison Square Garden, needed more than 100 stitches to repair an injury sustained Tuesday afternoon when Pavlik put his hands through a window while trying to repair it. "Kelly is going to be okay," assured Mike Pavlik, Kelly's father. "He had an accident and suffered these little cuts all over his hands that needed at least 100 stitches. I don't know how long it will take for Kelly to come back, but we had to change our plans to go to New York this weekend. Kelly's hands are swollen, and he certainly won't be able to shake anyone's hand. The doctors also told him not to travel, especially on a plane, because the pressure could open the stitches. But he is okay." Pavlik, 32-0 (29), became world middleweight champion by knocking out Taylor, 27-1-1 (17), in the seventh round of a September 29 title bout at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City. Karo Parisyan: One step at a time back to a title shot - 08 Nov 2007 03:00:21am Posted: 07 Nov 2007 09:00 PM CST By John Buhl It's difficult to get to the pinnacle of any sport, and Karo Parisyan knows from first hand experience that mixed martial arts is no exception. To put his UFC 78 showdown against PRIDE veteran Ryo Chonan in Newark, N.J., on November 17 into the proper context, you have to go back two years to when Parisyan should've been fighting Matt Hughes for the UFC welterweight title. An injury forced him out of the fight, and he's been waiting to get that elusive title shot ever since. Parisyan went through a variety of emotions when he realized the opportunity to fight for a championship had passed him by for no other reason except bad luck – anger, frustration, impatience – wondering how much longer the wait would be or if he'd ever get another chance. "I was supposed to get a warm up fight to get the ring rust off," Parisyan says, talking about his first fight back after healing from the quadriceps injury that cost him his shot at Hughes. "The guy I ended up fighting, Nick Thompson, he's the Bodog champion now, so that's a tough comeback fight. I thought after that I'd get my title shot after that, but it didn't work out the way I thought it would." (Continue Reading)

Internet brawler Slice takes aim at MMA pros - 08 Nov 2007 01:56:36am Posted: 07 Nov 2007 07:56 PM CST | For years, Kimbo Slice has been an Internet sensation for his backyard brawls, battering and bruising complete strangers. Now, fight fans will get to find out if he has the skills to be a true professional. Slice, whose real name is Kevin Ferguson, signed a long-term deal with EliteXC on Oct. 11th. He will make his debut for the promotion Saturday night at "EliteXC: Renegade" at American Bank Center in Corpus Christi, Texas. The event will air on Showtime at 10 p.m. Slice was initially set to fight Mike Bourke, but he withdrew from the bout after breaking his clavicle during training. Bo Cantrell, a journeyman fighter who lost his last fight to Brad Imes on Oct. 27, will take Bourke's place. | For years, Slice has been smashing up opponents in underground street fights, taking on all comers just about anywhere -- whether it be in a backyard, basement or parking lot. He has gained cult-like status for these fights, many of them recorded and posted on the Internet on popular sites like You Tube. Now, Slice has given up his life on the streets and is hoping to make a career out of being a professional mixed martial arts fighter. "In a backyard fight, I used to enter those things high," Slice said. "I was smoking before I went out to fight. Now it's different. I know these guys that are fighting me are professionals. So I have to bring my 'A' game." ( Continue Reading) |

Dan "The Beast" Severn Tells It Like It is... - 07 Nov 2007 10:06:27pm Posted: 07 Nov 2007 04:06 PM CST By Percy Crawford UFC Hall of Famer and MMA veteran Dan "The Beast" Severn gets us caught up on his career, his future plans and much more. You don't want to miss what he had to say about Dana White and the UFC as well his thoughts on Mark Cuban's HDNet Fights. Check it out! PC: You are in the UFC Hall of Fame. Did you ever try to get a position over there? DS: No. It has changed. The game has changed and the company has changed. The UFC is coming under more scrutiny all of the time. It's not the same product that it once was. I do a lot of things with mixed martial arts. I work with a lot of other companies. I do have a passion for the sport and I would like to have a positive influence in the direction of the sport because the bottom line is, you're taking care of an athlete. I really don't see that happening with a Dana White at the helm of the UFC. I think they've done a lot of good things for the sport, but at the same token, they have a cocky, conceded arrogance that is coming about them and I don't care for it. It's changed and I don't know who the leadership comes from. From what I know, they have the two brothers, the Fertitta brothers, that own basically 90% of the UFC and Dana White owns the other 10%, but Dana White is kind of the face of the UFC and seems like he is the one making the most comments about everything that's going on. He may not be the best person that should be out there articulating his opinions. If he is, they may want to bring somebody in there to groom him a little more and help him on his presentation skills. I politically danced around that one a little bit (laughing). (Continue Reading)

Charles McCarthy Catches Us Up On His TUF Life - 07 Nov 2007 08:11:46pm Posted: 07 Nov 2007 02:11 PM CST By Sid Needelman Charles McCarthy, Ultimate Fighter star reminds us what great talent he trains with, that he'll be back in the UFC with 5 fights left on his contract, and on a side-note, an update on the Phil Baroni, The New York Badass' troubles in Charle's region of the country. Charles McCarthy, The Ultimate Fighter star, calls up from out west. One of his stablemates is preparing for a fight tonight. Carmelo Marerro is ready off his stint in the UFC, and his recent grappling battle with Babalu, and is ready for his next fight. Others on the card include one of my favorites, Butterbean. Say what you will about his ground game, but he is fun to watch because he brings it every time and does not fear focusing on his stand-up game. And while Butterbean is not everyone's favorite, Mark Kerr, who is also on the card is not either. He has had his trouble as the world watched his spiral in drugs in the documentary The Smashing Machine. Had I not traveled from Florida to Denver to see Kerr fight a few years back, just to have him not fight, I might still have a place in my list of favorites for him. I hope he wins. So anyways, Chucky – Charles McCarthy, known for being slightly less enthusiastic in the Ultimate Fighter house, is the lead guy at his American Top Team branch that he opened up wit the help of the larger team and his buddy. The event Carmelo is in is interesting as it boasts ringside couch seating with VIP champagne service, and guest commentators Kimo and Phil "The New York Badass" Baroni. For those who have not been keeping track, Baroni's record in Miami-Dade clerk of courts is now non-existent, thanks to some good attorney work. He had been arrested after an altercation on South Beach a while back. Again sidetracked, Charles was recently seen at one of the latest NAGA events in support of his team. We spoke a little about life, and how it isn't as "TUF" as you might think from his rejected nickname, "Captain Miserable." He has a great family life, his MMA school is doing great, and he would urge you to take a look at the webpage: www. bocamma.com (Continue Reading)

Roan Carneiro: "It will be an Amazing Fight!" - 07 Nov 2007 07:33:42pm Posted: 07 Nov 2007 01:33 PM CST By Gleidson Venga Roan Carneiro is in Atlanta, training for his return to the Octagon on Dec. 29 against Peruvian Tony DeSouza. The Brazilian welterweight, 11-6, fought most recently in June, losing via rear-naked choke to Jon Fitch. Carneiro knows he won't have an easy time with DeSouza, 10-3, who is coming off a knockout loss in December 2006 to Thiago Alves. "I thought he is an excellent choice," Carneiro said of the matchup with DeSouza. "He is a well-known guy. He is very experienced and tough. Man, I like this guy!" UFC 79 promises to be one of the better events this year, and Carneiro guarantees that, if it's up to him, he will make his fight the best of the night. "It will be an amazing fight," Carneiro said. "Both of us lost our last fights, so we have to give our best."

Alistair Overeem vs Paul Buentello, A War in the making. - 07 Nov 2007 07:13:07pm Posted: 07 Nov 2007 01:13 PM CST By Stash Capar One of Europe's most recognizable mixed martial artists will finally get his chance to take home a belt in a matter of days. Dutch PRIDE veteran Alistair "Demolition Man" Overeem will vie for the vacant Strikeforce heavyweight title, as he takes on tough-as-nails American striker Paul "The Headhunter" Buentello on Friday, Nov. 16 at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif. Many expect the bout will be a total stand-up war. "I'm paying a lot of attention to strength and explosiveness in my training," Overeem said. "I've changed a lot of things in my regimen, and I see the results. It's strange … I've never really focused on conditioning or functional strength, never lifted weights in my life, and I probably should have." The Golden Glory fighter (25-11) needs a win after losing three out of four bouts over the past year. All three came by first round TKO to top tier competition, including his most recent loss to Golden Glory teammate Sergei Kharitonov (15-3) at K-1 HERO'S "Tournament Final" Sept. 17 in Yokohama, Japan. "We've had some setbacks," Golden Glory trainer Martijn De Jong said, "but Alistair has been trying many new things in his training. He's also got new training partners, like Sergei Kharitonov. We know where his weaknesses lie, and we know what we have to do to win." Buentello (23-9), who has been training in New Mexico with Greg Jackson, has gone on the record saying the fight will not go past the first round. He has also hinted that he will not hesitate to trade with the Dutchman. Buentello last fought in June, as he knocked out former K-1 standout Carter Williams.
