Pezão is back 13 kg lighter on Saturday

Posted: 10 Nov 2007 01:37 AM CST

After a surgery and achieving the requirements of the athletic committee of California, that had denied his visa to fight in America because of a small tumor located in the pituitary gland, Antonio Pezão is back, lighter and more motivated to reach the top of the heavyweight category . According to his manager, Alex Davis, the surgery held in Nova Friburgo, in Rio de Janeiro , by Dr. Marcelo Pinaus was a great success. "Now he´s lighter and faster. Before, he was 135kg, but now he decided to lose weight to the enter the heavys category and is weighing 122kg" said Alex, who believes in Pezão´s victory in Elite XC, which is held this Saturday (10) in Texas, USA. "Johnathan Wiezorack is tough, has 11 fights and only one loss, but I believe Pezão can win him. He is returning to be the best heavy in the world" bet Alex.

Mirko "Crocop" Filipovic Speaks

Posted: 10 Nov 2007 01:20 AM CST

Dnevnik.hr: Is CroCop back?
Mirko: CroCop is recovered, it will take a month to begin with sparrings again, although I have a special helmet for protection. The stripes are affecting my visibility so it's not like the real thing, but the regular sparring sessions start in about a month. I think my next fight is going to happen in January.

You recently had a nose surgery?
Mirko: The nose problems have nothing to do with my defeats. I had trouble breathing, my nose was broken, one side was at 30%, while the other side was blocked completely. It's important when you face such an intense efforts.

Is this the toughest period in your career after you left K1?
Mirko: Not only that, this is the toughest period of my entire career.

Did you think about ending your career?
Mirko: I did think of it the night after my last defeat, but I'm not going to end my career soon. I will have 5 or 6 fights at least. Maybe even more, who can tell. Every fight could be your last one. You can suffer from a fatal injury, you can break your leg or arm. If I'll be able to fight I'll fight, it's my life and my choice and I enjoy doing it. I have a very strong motive, especially beacuse of number of „wise" Internet users saying that I'm done. I will prove they were wrong.

Did you ever think about taking a year off to rest and come back stronger?
Mirko: In my case that would be a very long break. Of course, I would train a lot still if it would happen. Sometime you have to end your career, in a year, 3 or 5 years, or even 10 years - look at Randy Couture, he was the champion at 44. I will always train hard, but long breaks like that are not for me.

Are you in touch with Dana White and how does he feel about your defeats?

Mirko: We keep in touch, but you'll have to ask him about that.

So, your nose is recovering well, you are wearing a special helmet. Your return is set for January due to a medical reasons?

Mirko: Yes, because of the surgery I'm not allowed to fight sooner. My nose is not fully recovered and I still have stiches in it.

Are there any rumors about your next opponent?

Mirko: None that I'm aware of.

Who you would like to fight next? Someone with a big reputation or?
Mirko: It's up to the UFC's management. I will fight anyone who they put me against. I have never turned down any opponent.

Anything left to say?
Mirko: I'll be back (smiling).

Frank Trigg & Mayhem Announced For HDNET Fights

Posted: 10 Nov 2007 01:11 AM CST

Mark Cuban's HDNet Fights on Friday officially announced its Dec. 15 event at the American Airlines Center in Dallas. The co-main events feature four Ultimate Fighting Championship veterans. Jason "Mayhem" Miller and Sean Salmon will square off, sharing top billing with Frank Trigg and his opponent, Edwin Dewees.

Also announced for the event, entitled "Reckless Abandon," are fights between Yves Edwards and Alonzo Martinez, Pete Spratt and Tristan Yunker, Chris Bowles and Cory Mahon, Patrick Castillo and Jay White, and Freddie Espiricueta and C.B. Dollaway.

"With Frank (Trigg) and Jason (Miller), you know there's going to be a ton of action and lots of bizarre things can happen in the cage," said Guy Mezger, HDNet Fights' matchmaker. "Frank is called 'Twinkle Toes' because he's known for painting his toe nails, but it certainly doesn't represent his vicious fighting style.

"On the other hand, Jason has certainly earned his 'Mayhem' nickname. With him, you never know what you will see, but you know it will be something crazy."

"We're thrilled to have these talented and entertaining fighters on board with HDNet Fights," said Cuban. "Our goal is to present the best fighters in the best fights we can make. These are two of the top middleweights in the world and we are fortunate enough to have them both fighting on the same card.

Kimbo Slice Escapes The Web

Posted: 09 Nov 2007 11:07 PM CST

By Jose Rodriguez

He may be the biggest Internet star to never appear in a porn flick. Kimbo Slice, the web's undisputed champ of bare-knuckle backyard fights, has amassed a long resume knocking the Chiclets out of Miami street brawlers on YouTube.

Promoters say his fights on the 'Net have received more than 10 million downloads. But this spring, the menacing man who wears a thick-link gold chain with a clenched fist pendant, left the underground fight scene to take a serious stab at mixed-martial arts.

Most noted for his standup, Slice made his MMA debut in June submitting former WBO heavyweight champ Ray Mercer with a guillotine. Slice, whose real name is Kevin Ferguson, will take his perfect 1-0 record to the cage tonight in EliteXC: Renegade in Corpus Christi, Tex. against the 10 and 10 Bo Cantrell.

Riddick Bowe Training MMA With Mark Kerr!

Posted: 09 Nov 2007 10:49 PM CST

By David A. Avila

HOLLYWOOD, CA. - It was a surreal sight to find former heavyweight world champion boxer Riddick Bowe standing near the entrance to a mixed martial arts fight card in the back lot of an old Hollywood motion picture studio that is now a nightclub.

But there he was "Big Daddy" the former scourge of prizefighting who retired for a period of eight years then returned with a fight here and there. Bowe wants to return again, but not to boxing, he's throwing his hat into the world of MMA.

"I've got to make a living for my family," said Bowe, 40, who is a two-time heavyweight champion in professional boxing.

Xcess Entertainment signed Bowe to fight exclusively for them beginning on Dec. 12. Though no site has been confirmed the former boxer is targeted for that fight card in California.

"If Evander Holyfield can fight so can I," said Bowe citing his former foe's age of 45. "I just turned 40."

Bowe will not be the first former world champion boxer to try the cage, 46-year-old Ray Mercer is a former WBO titleholder who participated in an MMA fight and was submitted by Kimbo Slice this year. But Bowe and his promoters hope to get the former boxer prepared by next month.

"We have Riddick Bowe training with Mark Kerr in Los Angeles," said Bruce Valachi, CEO for Xcess Fighting. "He should learn a lot from Kerr."

Horwich Tied To IFL Through 2008

Posted: 09 Nov 2007 10:34 PM CST

By Brian Knapp

The International Fight League has extended the contract of middleweight contender Matt Horwich through the conclusion of the 2008 season, according to Jerry Milani, public relations manager for the team-based promotion.

Horwich (20-9-1) will meet Benji Radach for the IFL middleweight championship at the IFL World Grand Prix on Saturday, Dec. 29 at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn. A product of Team Quest and protégé of former Olympic silver medalist Matt Lindland, Horwich submitted Brian Foster with a first-round armbar Nov. 3 to secure his place in the 185-pound final.

One of MMA's most eccentric characters, Horwich holds submission wins over UFC veterans Josh Burkman, Jason MacDonald and Vernon White. He will enter his bout with Radach as a heavy underdog, though he has won his last two fights.

White Backpedaling On Sherk?

Posted: 09 Nov 2007 10:27 PM CST

By Brian Knapp

Having gone on record saying he would not strip lightweight champion Sean Sherk of his title, even if the California State Athletic Commission upholds his positive test for suspected steroid use, UFC president Dana White seems to be in a subtle backpedal.

The UFC announced last week that B.J. Penn would square off with Joe Stevenson for the interim lightweight crown at UFC 80 "Rapid Fire" on Saturday, Jan. 19 in Newcastle, England. White said today he would support the CSAC's final ruling. Sherk's appeal hearing has been scheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 4 in Los Angeles.

"The belt can't be in limbo for this long," White told UFC.com. "I've said since the beginning that I believe in Sean Sherk, but we have to support the athletic commission in whatever decision they make. As soon as Sean Sherk can put all of this behind him, he can get right back into the Octagon, and he will be given an immediate shot at the lightweight championship."

White's comments appear to indicate Sherk will no longer be considered the champion following the Penn-Stevenson fight in January.

Cotto Hopes To Capitalize On His Youth

Posted: 09 Nov 2007 10:15 PM CST

By Lance Pugmire

NEW YORK -- Miguel Cotto's building process is complete. He's 27, unbeaten and ready to cash in on his stature as the World Boxing Assn. welterweight champion.

Orchestrated by his veteran promoter Bob Arum, Cotto has knocked out 25 of 30 opponents on a steady career path that parallels the one perfected by Oscar De La Hoya -- a slow and steady series of challenges that accounts for a learning curve but aims for a legendary night.

Saturday is that evening for Cotto, who will fight Pomona's Sugar Shane Mosley at Madison Square Garden in New York. Mosley has won world championship belts as a lightweight, welterweight and light middleweight.

He's also 36 years old, hasn't knocked out anyone except Fernando Vargas since 2001, and now finds himself in his 50th fight, counting a no-decision.

"Throughout boxing history, there's always been battles between the young lion and the old lion," Arum said. "If the young lion is well-schooled, he wins. That's the law of nature and boxing."

Jay White Returns To Action On HDNET Fights

Posted: 09 Nov 2007 09:45 PM CST

(Coach Shawn Tompkins holds pads for Jay White)

Heavyweight Jay White returns to the cage on Saturday December 15th at the American Airlines Arena in Dallas on the HDNet Fights show. He'll be taking on Patrick Castillo.

Jay is chomping at the bit to get back in the cage. His last fight was on St Patrick's Day in 2006.

Jay came down from Oregon to train with Randy for 2 weeks before the Gonzaga fight and ended up staying. He spent his summer serving as a stand-in for Gabriel Gonzaga and rolling with The Natural everyday. He also helped Phil Friedman get ready for his pro debut and trained with James "Colossus" Thompson, Forrest Griffin and Kimbo.

Now that he is settled in with a good, positive team situation he's ready to make his mark on the HDNet Fights show.

A Message From Evan Tanner!

Posted: 09 Nov 2007 09:00 PM CST

If whoever took my stuff reads this:

I'm really disappointed. I had some things stolen out of my Land Cruiser last night while it was parked in front of the gym. The UFC had just given me a brand new workout bag full of shirts and beanies, with a personalized engraved name tag. They took that. What I'm most upset about though, is that they took all of my mma trading cards that I sign for the fans and the kids. Come on now, that's really uncool. It was all in a storage container in the back of the Cruiser. I'm not sure what else was in it. If whoever did this happens to read this, be cool, at least give my trading cards back. I need those for the fans. It would also be nice to have the name tag back. My car will be in the same place as it was last night. You can just drive by and throw the cards in the back. No questions asked. It would be nice to have everything returned, but at least give the cards back.

Underdog Santiago Preparing to Upset Bodog Fight Champ

Posted: 09 Nov 2007 08:21 PM CST

Bodog Fight Middleweight Champion Trevor Prangley may be considered the favorite to win California's first-ever sanctioned mixed martial arts tournament, but Florida's Jorge Santiago is prepared to upset the champ should they meet Friday, Nov. 16 at the HP Pavilion in San Jose.

"I'll throw everything I have at him," says Santiago. "I think I can beat him on the ground or standing up."

Santiago (14-7) and Prangley (16-4) are two of the four men competing in the single-elimination middleweight tournament that will headline Strikeforce: Four Men Enter, One Man Survives, presented by Bodog Fight.

The other combatants are Yuki Sasaki (21-13-1) and Falaniko "Niko" Vitale (24-7). The winner of the tournament will have to get through two matches, with each bout consisting of two five-minute rounds. A random draw to determine the match-ups will take place during the weigh-in, and although Santiago recognizes Prangley's skills, he isn't afraid to face him in the tournament.

"Trevor Prangley says he is one of the best 185-pound fighters in the world and I agree with him, but everyone has his day."

A black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, Santiago is a threat on the mat but he's also able to strike with the best - as he proved in his Bodog Fight debut last April in St. Petersburg, when he knocked out the hard-hitting Andrei Semenov with a vicious uppercut. The blow stunned the Russian so badly, he mistakenly attempted to tackle the referee before he could regain his bearings.

Cotto Brings Hi-Tech Edge!

Posted: 09 Nov 2007 07:46 PM CST

Photo: Chris Farina

When Miguel Cotto enters the ring to face Sugar Shane Mosley on Saturday night, he will do it on firm footing. The WBA welterweight champion will be wearing a super hi-tech boxing boot with a special sole made out of a Michelin rubber compound specifically designed to channel liquid away from the shoe to prevent Cotto's feet from slipping on the slick ring canvas advertisements that often cause boxers problems. In addition, the boot is supposed to provide maximum traction, allowing Cotto to firmly plant his feet before unleashing his power punches. Cotto's custom made gold shoes will feature Cotto's signature logo and the Puerto Rican flag to honor his native country.

Cotto, Mosley make weight!

Posted: 09 Nov 2007 07:33 PM CST

By Matthew Hurley

Miguel Cotto and Shane Mosley weighed in this afternoon for their bout at Madison Square Garden on Saturday night. The two fighters will be contesting for Cotto's World Boxing Association title belt. Both fighters came in under the 147 pound limit. The two fighters weighed in at 146.25 pounds, respectively. Both men looked to be in excellent condition and conducted a brief but intense staredown.

Antonio Margarito also came in at 146.25 pounds for his fight with Golden Johnson. Johnson did not make weight, missing the limit by ½ pound. He will weigh in again.

Joel Casamayor came in at 134 pounds for his lightweight bout with Jose Santa Cruz who weighed in at 134.75 pounds.

Victor Ortiz came in at 141.5 pounds for his junior welterweight bout against Carlos Maussa who weighed in 142.5. Massau was ½ pound over the stipulated weight agreement and will weigh in again.

Kimbo the latest street-fighting sensation

Posted: 09 Nov 2007 06:42 PM CST

By Dave Meltzer

Will the real Kimbo Slice please stand up?

Before there was such a thing as UFC, and knowledge of what constituted real fighting with techniques from every fighting sport legal, people had their fantasy about the big streetfighter who wasn't trained in the gym who was the toughest guy in town. The role is as old as the fame of the pro wrestler Dick the Bruiser in the 50s, and maybe goes back to the pioneer heavyweight boxer, John L. Sullivan.

In the modern MMA era, the first guy in the U.S. who fit the bill was David "Tank" Abbott. In the early days of UFC, even though Abbott never got so much as one win in his career over a top-level fighter, he made himself a lucrative career in the sport and was one of the most popular and most talked about fighters in the UFC's early years.

Whether true or not, people bought into the idea that Abbott was this guy who would rather fight than do anything else, and would come off the bar stool and get into the cage and fight anyone at any time. Even today, Abbott has this unique charisma, because people think back to the early UFC's and remember his spectacular knockouts, even though most of them were a generation ago against fighters with skill levels that the only way they'd be at a UFC show today is if they purchased a ticket.

But Abbott has past 40, and his record over the past nine years is 1-7.

Main Event Babtism

Posted: 09 Nov 2007 04:28 PM CST

By Brian Knapp

Karl James Noons – known as K.J. to the combat sports community – sees a first-class ticket to mixed martial arts stardom when he looks at Nick Diaz, the irreverent Cesar Gracie protégé with the troubled past, white-knuckled bravado and intimidating skill set. A professional boxer and kickboxer, Noons has steered clear of the world's elite to this point in his career. His crossover has been smooth, outside, of course, of the Charles "Krazy Horse" Bennett right hand that relieved him of his senses at EliteXC "Destiny" nine months ago.

His baptism into the main event ranks will become official this Saturday when Noons meets Diaz for the vacant EliteXC lightweight (under 160 pounds) championship at EliteXC "Renegade," which originates from the America Bank Center in Corpus Christi, Texas. Opportunity has never knocked louder for the native Hawaiian.

"He's the number one guy in the world," Noons says. "He beat [PRIDE lightweight champion Takanori] Gomi. I'm getting an opportunity to face the number one guy for a title with EliteXC."

More On Cotto vs Mosley

Posted: 09 Nov 2007 04:08 PM CST

By Matt Richardson

Oscar de la Hoya and Bob Arum have had a tumultuous relationship over the years. At times they loved one another; at times they hated one another. They have frequently disagreed but have recently come to a mutual understanding. With de la Hoya's Golden Boy promotions gaining steam and with Arum's Top Rank as prominent as ever the two men have began working together in new ways; promoting some of the best fights in the sport. Despite their notoriously rocky relationship the two men seem to agree on two things: they want to make the best fights available and they both think Saturday's welterweight fight between Miguel Cotto (Arum's fighter) and Shane Mosley (Oscar's) will be an excellent fight.

One of the best fights available however, could include de la Hoya himself. If Cotto beats Mosley on Saturday at Madison Square Garden one of the biggest, best and most obvious fights would then be de la Hoya versus Cotto; but will it happen?

"Obviously my last fight was a sparring session. It was a sparring session and that's the reason why I'm fighting two more times and hanging up the gloves next year," explained de la Hoya. "I still feel I have the desire and the energies to continue. And yes, I do want to go out with a big bang. I'm not going to say that I'm going to fight Cotto. I'm not going to say that I'm not going to fight Cotto. I do want to be involved in those classic fights, where people are going to talk about for years to come; those brawls. I want to be involved with that. I'm hungry for that."

Sherk's Attorney Formally Protests Hearing Date

Posted: 09 Nov 2007 03:01 PM CST

By Loretta Hunt

Howard Jacobs
, the attorney representing UFC lightweight champion Sean Sherk in his appeal of a California State Athletic Commission suspension for suspected steroid use, has formally protested the latest scheduled hearing date of Tuesday, Dec. 4 in Los Angeles. Sherk's case has already been postponed twice.

Jacobs said all parties involved, including commissioners and the state's legal counsel – Deputy Attorney General Karen Chappelle – had agreed to reconvene for a Nov. 13 hearing, provided they could secure a room in which to conduct it.

"I seemingly can't force them to give me an explanation as to why the deputy attorney general suddenly became unavailable [for Nov. 13] when she said she was available," Jacobs said. "I can't get them to explain to me why there's no one in the entire State Attorney General's office who can handle the case or why – if there was another matter that came up for Karen Chappelle – she can't postpone that matter, because she already agreed to this one. I've asked for answers to all those questions, and I haven't been told anything."

Josh Barnett vs Hikaru Sato on Dec 22nd

Posted: 09 Nov 2007 01:18 PM CST

By Gino Mongelli

Former UFC heavyweight champion Josh Barnett will face Hikaru Sato in a catch wrestling-rules match at the Pancrase 2007 Rising Tour event on Saturday, Dec. 22 at Differ Ariake in Tokyo.

Barnett's participation in the Pancrase event, announced Thursday, seems to quiet talk that he would be competing at K-1 "Premium 2007 Dynamite!!" on New Year's Eve at the Kyocera Dome in Osaka. FEG president Sadaharu Tanigawa announced recently he had made financial offers to both Bob Sapp and Akebono to appear on the Monday, Dec. 31 card. Speculation soon arose that an offer had been made to Barnett, as well.

Four additional matches – to be contested under MMA rules – have been added for the Dec. 22 Pancrase show, along with the names of six competitors. The list includes former King of Pancrase Yuki Kondo (47-20-6), who holds victories over Semmy Schilt and current Strikeforce middleweight champion Frank Shamrock. No opponent has been named for the 32-year-old veteran.

Will Shields get chance to shine?

Posted: 09 Nov 2007 01:10 PM CST

By Kevin Iole

He hasn't lost since the end of 2004 and he's reeled off victories over some of the top mixed martial artists in the world, but Jake Shields somehow remains one of the game's most anonymous stars. And even when things seem to be going good for him, something happens to put a damper on it.

But Shields takes the view that sooner or later, it's going to dawn on the masses that he's one of the world's elite welterweights. Shields, 28, hasn't lost since he dropped a decision to Akira Kikuchi on Dec. 14, 2004. Since, he's reeled off eight in a row, including wins over WEC champion Carlos Condit and top-ranked UFC middleweight Yushin Okami.

Shields, who is 19-4-1, thought he was going to be fighting Mike Pyle on Showtime on Saturday in Corpus Christi, Texas, for the Elite XC welterweight title. He'll still be fighting Pyle and he'll still be on Showtime, but the title shot has vanished. Pyle was unhappy with the way he was being promoted by Elite XC and declined the title shot. Shields wasn't sure what to make of the situation, but said he'll bring the same intensity he would have had the bout been for a belt.

"Obviously, every fighter wants to win a championship," Shields said. "It's one of my goals. He didn't want it for whatever his reasons are, but that doesn't change the fact that I need to perform at a certain level."

Kelly Pavlik Official Injury Update

Posted: 09 Nov 2007 01:00 PM CST

World middleweight champion KELLY PAVLIK suffered minor injuries to his hands and forearms while repairing a broken window at his house on November 5, but the prognosis is excellent and his rematch against former world champion Jermain Taylor remains on schedule for February 16, 2008

"Kelly sustained three superficial lacerations to the right forearm and hand and also three superficial lacerations to the left forearm and hand. He also had numerous superficial abrasions. The wounds were explored and there was no evidence of tendon damage or tendon involvement on any of the lacerations. The six lacerations were repaired with sutures in the office," said Sandy P. Naples, M.D. of Poland Family Practice in Poland, OH. Dr. Naples is also the Chairman of the Department of Family Practices at St. Elizabeth Health Center. "He has full function including full flexion, extension, supination and pronation. He has full range of motion of his fingers."

In layman's terms, within a week of the sutures being removed, scheduled for November 16, Kelly will be able to resume his training. Pavlik's training camp for the Taylor rematch remains set for the first week of December.

The Return Of Evan Tanner!!

Posted: 09 Nov 2007 12:43 PM CST

By Ken Pishna

Former Ultimate Fighting Championship middleweight titleholder Evan Tanner on Thursday announced via his myspace page that he has signed a four-fight contract with the UFC. Independent sources have confirmed the signing.

At this time, no return date or opponent has been named.

Tanner last fought for the UFC, or anywhere else for that matter, more than one-and-a-half years ago when he defeated Justin Levens by triangle choke at UFC 59.

He won the middleweight championship at UFC 51, defeating David Terrell by TKO. His reign didn't last long though, as he lost the belt to Rich Franklin four months later.

The 36-year-old fighter out of Amarillo, Texas has long been considered a nomad, never staying with one fight camp for very long. Tanner has spent time training with teams such as Team Quest and Chute Boxe USA, but is currently training at Hard Knocks Muay Thai in Las Vegas.

CSAC: Tate Positive For Marijuana

Posted: 09 Nov 2007 12:36 PM CST

Female mixed martial artist Jennifer Tate tested positive for marijuana following her first-round submission loss to Shayna Baszler on Oct. 26's ShoXC card, the California State Athletic Commission announced Thursday.

Tate, 27, has been suspended for three months and fined $500. The Stockton, Calif., native will be eligible to return to the cage on Jan. 24, 2008.

News of the positive test adds injury to insult for Tate, who tapped out to a textbook armbar in less than a minute against the Josh Barnett trained Baszler in Santa Ynez, Calif.

The 'Count'Down - Week Three

Posted: 09 Nov 2007 12:20 PM CST

By Michael Bisping

Hi everyone. This week I'm going to focus this whole thing on talking to Rashad directly, after his hilarious and slightly puzzling blog on UFC.com two days ago. Enjoy!

Rashad, I'm glad you've got an English guy in camp so he can tell you what I mean when I say your last blog was complete bollocks.

At the risk of taking it to the "He said, she said" level - you threw the first rotten egg, mate. You did the video on UFC.com blasting me as a fighter and insinuating you shouldn't even have to fight me. Then your blog on Wednesday went completely over the top, making this fight a little personal when it is really about two undefeated fighters trying to move up the division.

I extended you nothing but respect, all I did was predict a win for myself and did a few one-liners about a knockout (it is called selling a fight, Rashad) which I even added the smiley face ;-) to make sure everyone knew it was just "fighting hype talk" and not to be taken seriously.

But thanks for giving me a look inside your head with your little rant. It was very interesting indeed, not to mention laugh out loud funny in places. I don't know if Joe Rogan is looking for an opening act for his comedy gigs, but your blog is a hell of an audition piece if he is.

You kept on about all these disrespectful things I'd said, but he never once gave an example. And such big fighting words from such a short man, Rashad! Very funny.

Koscheck rights self for next fight

Posted: 09 Nov 2007 12:11 PM CST

EDINBORO -- Josh Koscheck has had hundreds of workouts in Edinboro's wrestling room. Until Tuesday, none had ended with him punching Tim Flynn in the gut. No, the former NCAA champion and his former coach didn't get into a scrap after an overheated training session. Flynn was simply curious to feel what it's like to take a punch from an Ultimate Fighting Championships star.

Yeah. It hurts.

"I could hardly speak," Flynn said after Koscheck drilled him just below the ribs with a shot the current UFC welterweight contender insisted was only about 10 percent of full force.

"It's all placement," Koscheck said.

Perfecting the finer points of punch placement is a relatively recent pursuit for Koscheck, whose mixed martial arts career remains in its toddler years.

Handing out punishment in the basement of McComb Fieldhouse is nothing new. Koscheck did it routinely during his college career, which included four All-America finishes and back-to-back NCAA finals appearances.

He was back in the place where he first made headlines this week. He worked a coaches clinic before the season-opening Fighting Scot Duals, then stayed to work out with Edinboro's wrestlers and spar with former teammate Justin Wilcox, an aspiring mixed martial artist trying to follow in Koscheck's expanding footsteps.

UFC playing hardball with Arlovski

Posted: 09 Nov 2007 12:04 PM CST

By Roman Modrowski

Former UFC heavyweight champ Andrei Arlovski is in the biggest fight of his career, and he's losing. Arlovski, who fights out of Chicago, is in a war of wills with UFC president Dana White. And as fierce as the 6-4, 240-pound Arlovski has been in the octagon at times, White is the toughest hombre in the UFC. You don't take a nothing organization and build it into a Sports Illustrated cover story without being able to stare down formidable opponents.

Arlovski has one fight left on his UFC contract. White wants to sign him to an extension before scheduling Arlovski's next fight. Arlovski wants to fight first and then negotiate a new contract. If he doesn't sign an extension or fight again, Arlovski's contract expires April 15.

White holds all the cards, but I doubt he'll just let the contract expire. It's bad business. Arlovski remains one of the five most popular fighters in the UFC. Just his appearance in Cincinnati at UFC 77 caused a huge stir in the crowd despite the fact he hasn't fought since April 21.

At the very least, White will want Arlovski to sell pay-per-view units before the contract expires. But in the meantime, Arlovski doesn't have an income. He still trains at JABB gym, and trainers aren't free. He's also losing sponsorship opportunities.

Kimbo lands in CC

Posted: 09 Nov 2007 11:57 AM CST

By Matt Young

Kevin Ferguson walked into the Solomon P. Ortiz Center on Wednesday, and poked his head through a black curtain.

Even if you didn't know that Ferguson is better known as Kimbo Slice, you could tell the head poking through curtain belonged to someone of acclaim just by the way the heads in the ballroom whipped around to eye the newcomer.

Of course, it's hard to be inconspicuous when you stand 6-foot-2, 235 pounds, sport an untamed beard and a bald top of the head framed by horizontal cornrows around the edges. The hefty-looking gold fist hanging around the gold chain on his neck only added to the entrance, as did his manager Mike Imber's T-shirt that featured a grainy photo of Kimbo with the bold letters "GIVE ME MY BREAD" printed across the bottom.

His birth certificate may say Kevin Ferguson, but now he's Kimbo Slice, and he's making his professional mixed martial arts debut with EliteXC on Saturday at the American Bank Center.

Nick Diaz: MMA's Pro Weed Warrior

Posted: 09 Nov 2007 11:30 AM CST

By Ralph Gonzalez

It was a brilliant performance by Stockton, California's Nick Diaz (15-6) as he routed the highly regarded Japanese MMA star Takanori Gomi at Pride 33 in February. The huge upset would send notice to the Mixed Martial Arts community that Diaz was back in a big way.

Unfortunately for the (Cesar Gracie) Jiu-Jitsu black belt and professional boxer, the win would later be declared a no-contest by the Nevada State Athletic Commission after their tests revealed a high level of marijuana in his system.

"I feel it was done out of ignorance. The win was taken away from me because I smoke weed and that's stupid," said the 24-year old Diaz. "I'm a fighter and a martial artist. I feel martial artists and all artists in general could benefit from smoking weed and we should be able to smoke it all we want."

Diaz has proven himself in the past by impressively knocking out Robbie Lawler and most recently besting Josh Neer, Mike Aina and the aforementioned Gomi.

"I already know that I'm the best fighter in the world on a technical level. It's fine that they took the Gomi win away from me. *^*^ them!" Diaz said. "I know that I won. It's only going to make me strive harder to be the best."

Randy Couture To Speak Before The Green Bay Packers Sat Dec 8th

Posted: 09 Nov 2007 12:06 AM CST

By Brian Knapp

Three-time UFC heavyweight champion Randy Couture has accepted an invitation to speak before the Green Bay Packers on Saturday, Dec. 8 in Green Bay, Wisc., according to representatives from Xtreme Couture Mixed Martial Arts. The 44-year-old will be the Packers' special guest at their game against Oakland at legendary Lambeau Field the following day.

Jay Glazer, a member of the Fox Sports team that covers the NFL, was instrumental in establishing a relationship between the two parties, Green Bay head coach Mike McCarthy said.

"Jay and I were watching Randy's last fight, and we got on to the subject of talking to the players and finding different ways to get your message across to them," McCarthy said. "I was telling Jay that one of the platforms we like to use is having guest speakers come and talk to the team about relevant subjects or themes."

Doug Evans vs Mark Bocek UFC 79

Posted: 08 Nov 2007 09:20 PM CST

By Damon Martin

The undercard for Ultimate Fighting Championship 79 – featuring a main event of Matt Serra vs. Matt Hughes for the welterweight title – is starting to fill out as MMAWeekly has confirmed that Alaskan fighter Doug Evans will return to the Octagon to face grappler Mark Bocek in a lightweight bout.

In his UFC debut, Evans impressed many people with his performance against Roger Huerta. Although he lost the bout, he controlled Huerta for virtually the entire first round before the Texan rebounded in the second session.

Now Evans, who was originally asked to fight Jorge Gurgel at UFC 77 but had to bow out due to an injury, returns to face another fighter currently sporting a 0-1 record in the UFC in Mark Bocek.

Bocek made his debut at UFC 73 and faced top lightweight contender Frankie Edgar. The Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu fighter succumbed to Edgar in the first round, but looks for redemption against Evans.

UFC 79 takes place on Dec. 29 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas.

EliteXC makes bad gamble with Kimbo Slice

Posted: 08 Nov 2007 09:10 PM CST

By Todd Martin

Saturday night, Kevin "Kimbo Slice" Ferguson makes his EliteXC debut. Slice signed a multiyear contract with EXC in the past month and since then has been heavily promoted by the organization.

Why is Slice the most heavily promoted fighter on EXC's upcoming card? He doesn't have an amateur wrestling pedigree. He isn't an accomplished jiu jitsu practitioner. He isn't a Muay Thai standout. In fact, he has only one sanctioned fight, and that was an exhibition against 46-year-old boxer Ray Mercer. Slice isn't being promoted for any of those reasons. Rather, EXC is hoping to capitalize on his fame as an underground street fighter. This is a mistake.

EXC's promotional philosophy is a sound one. It realizes better than most of UFC's competitors that MMA is built around star power. There are plenty of talented MMA fighters, but not all have the charisma, personality, fighting style or life story that can bring in the masses. Stars are needed to attract new fans and garner significant interest. Thus, the company has focused on signing potentially marketable fighters like Frank Shamrock, Nick Diaz, Robbie Lawler and Gina Carano.

This philosophy led the company to Slice. Slice's unique look and background make him a novelty. He will never be just another MMA fighter. But the positives are greatly outweighed by the many negatives that come with getting behind Slice.

To begin with, his fame is not as great as many seem to believe. He made his name in Internet message board forums based on online fights, but that community has never been large enough to make a major show profitable. The internet MMA community is small relative to the audience that watches EXC on Showtime, and miniscule relative to the broader UFC audience that EXC hopes to tap into. Slice's fight with Mercer ran on pay-per-view and generated very little interest even with the novelty of Slice's first sanctioned fight. Slice won't bring in a broad audience.

Cotto, Mosley: Ready for War!

Posted: 08 Nov 2007 08:38 PM CST

By Jason Stern

Smiles, not photographer flashes, provided most of the blinding white light at B.B. Kings on Wednesday afternoon for the final press conference leading up to the Miguel Cotto-Shane Mosley WBA Welterweight Championship fight this Saturday night at Madison Square Garden. With the exception of a relatively surly champion, the entire dais was in good spirits, with a very sportsmanlike showing of respect by everyone involved in the promotion.

Co-promoter Bob Arum led things off by stating that the event is nearly sold-out. Due to overwhelming demand for affordable seating, Goldenboy CEO Oscar De La Hoya announced that the Garden has released the upper mezzanine level tickets for just $50 each.

Ken Shamrock Discusses Issues With UFC & More

Posted: 08 Nov 2007 08:23 PM CST

Ken Shamrock appeared as a guest on Fight Network Radio on November 7 along with his manager and attorney Rod Donohoo to discuss Shamrock's ongoing contractual dispute with Dana White and the UFC. Fight Network Radio can be heard every Monday through Friday at 3pm EST on Hardcore Sports Radio (Sirius Chan nel 186) and online at www.hardcoresportsradio.com and www.TheFightNetwork.com. The following is a transcript from that interview:

Ken Shamrock: Well, I'll tell you what happened was one, I talked to Dana White when I was fighting with Tito Ortiz on the Ultimate Fighter show and let him know there was an opportunity to get some of the Lion's Den fighters some fights on the team concept in the IFL. Dana kind've flipped out on that, saying he was gonna squash them and kill them, and that they're nothing but scumbags and he was gonna crush 'em. And it just kind of took me off guard, and he was very upset at them. And I guess he took them to court and lost a lawsuit to them, so he was pretty upset about that, because he thought that they had taken some things from him or whatever, but they were found innocent of all that. So, I told him, "You know, it's not like I'm fighting and it's not against my contract to coach my fighters on a show."

And he said, "Well, if you do that, even if it's not in your contract, you will never work for us again." Which I thought was kind of a threat - it had no bearing on my contract and that he was just trying to push me around. And at that point, I went ahead, and - because I didn't want to cause a problem at that point in time - I went ahead and said, "Alright, I'll just wait until I'm done with the fight with Ortiz." So, I finished the fight with Ortiz and then I went ahead and coached in the IFL. At that point, Dana White decided that he was going to go ahead and breach my contract and cut me loose. Since that time, there's been words exchanged back and forth. Dana White - and I'm going to prove that today - Dana White only says things that is going to benefit him and hurt others. And they're not even factual - it's just things that he makes up and that he says. The last interview that Dana White did was an interview to basically hurt me and put me down and hurt my credibility, and were completely, completely lies. And one of them was, Dana White said that Randy Couture makes money for us and Ken Shamrock does not.

EliteXC "Renegade" Final Press Conference Quotes

Posted: 08 Nov 2007 06:25 PM CST

By Tom Casino

KIMBO
"The time is getting near for me being able to do what I really like to do, and that's fight. I am definitely ready to fight somebody. "It's not that I dislike doing interviews, but it is something I need to learn to get used to and get more comfortable doing. It is not personal. I am just trying to focus on my fight and trying to avoid distractions. But I know doing interviews before a fight is part of my job. "This fight is not just about me. It is for my team that has worked so hard to get me ready. Of course, I wish it was Saturday now. I am definitely ready to hit somebody.''

BO CANTRELL

"I am not intimidated at all. This is not my first rodeo. This is more than a fight; it is like a title fight. Kimbo is getting a lot of attention so a victory would obviously be great for me. "I am just coming out to do my job. There is no pressure on me whatsoever. Let's see how he deals with the pressure and against someone who can get off first. I am ready too welcome Kimbo into the world of MMA.''

NICK DIAZ
"I want to thank everyone involved for making this fight happen, and I want to thank all my training partners for getting me ready. I want to thank Gary Shaw for bringing me back. "I am ready to go and it is going to be a great fight. Everybody is going to see a good show. "No way I give up. You are going to have to knock me out to win.''

KJ NOONS
"Nick is a great fighter, but this is my chance to show that I am truly a great fighter too. I am coming into this fight perfectly. I could not have asked for a better camp. The hand I broke in my last fight is fine. "The fans are in for a great night of fights. My fight with Nick can't help but be exciting. "I am confident and as prepared as I can be.''

JAKE SHIELDS
"I am looking for respect and becoming No. 1 in the world. As I have said time and again, I want to fight the best. "I expect a very good fight. I may try and take the fight to him and try and manhandle him, but I don't have a real plan going in. I'll just go out and see where things go. "Mike has some great submissions and has fought some great fighters. I know I need to be my best, but I feel ready for a top effort.''

MIKE PYLE
"I'd like to thank EliteXC for bringing me back. Title or no title, this is going to be a great fight for the fans and for the both of us. There are going to be fireworks. It is going to be a war. "Business is business and I hold no animosity toward anyone. This is not personal and I don't hold any grudges against anybody. "I am looking forward to competing again. The layoff will not bother me at all. I have a job to do and I am going to do it to the best of my ability on Saturday.''

EliteXC heads to Texas in search of identity

Posted: 08 Nov 2007 05:58 PM CST

By Steve Sievert

It looked like something out of Land of the Lost, not a stage prop worthy of being part of the debut of America's newest mixed martial arts promotion. And, yet, there it was for fans at DeSoto Civic Center in Southaven, Miss., and for those tuning in on Showtime for EliteXC's premiere show, optimistically called "Destiny."

Fighters made their way to the cage by walking through the mouth of the dragon - destiny indeed.

It was, well, an interesting start back in February for EliteXC, which hoped to make a grand entrance into the consciousness of mixed martial arts fans with two legendary names in the sport headlining its first show. The upstart organization had the backing of a premium cable network in Showtime and the leadership, connections and bravado of longtime boxing promoter Gary Shaw.

However, with the promotion on the verge of its fourth show, which will be held Saturday at AmericanBank Center in Corpus Christi, EliteXC is still searching for an identity and a formula that clicks with the broad MMA fan base.

In its three major shows, EliteXC has been all over the map in its approach. It resurrected the Shamrock and Gracie names, embraced fights among women (as long as one of those women was Gina Carano), teamed with Strikeforce on a co-promotion, and took its show to Hawaii. Through its parent company, ProElite, EliteXC also was part of the circus that was the Dynamite USA show in Los Angeles in June.

Shaw admits that it's been quite a ride.

"One of the low points, I think, was the show we did in June with FEG (Dynamite USA), where we kind of lost control of it. And I wasn't happy with the product, wasn't happy with the production. And I thought it was a real bad co-promotion. To me, that was the low point, because I like to be proud of what we put on. As far as high points, yeah, there are several. I had a high and a low on the same night. On February 10th, our first show ever in Mississippi was a huge high that we pulled it off with Frank (Shamrock) and Renzo Gracie. And the low point was when I looked at that dragon they were walking out of. So, when we make mistakes, I stand up and say we made mistakes. That dragon sucked."

Yves Edwards Talks Gonzalez, EliteXC

Posted: 08 Nov 2007 05:46 PM CST

By Keith Mills

The past two years have been rough on Yves Edwards. In the summer of 2005 Yves was on top of the world, beating Hermes Franca for a second time and getting an invitation to Pride's Bushido Grand Prix while riding a seven-win streak. Problems developed with first a loss to Joachim Hansen in the first round of the tournament followed by an upset loss to Mark Hominick and seemingly "final straw" loss to Joe Stevenson in UFC. Even BodogFIGHT resulted in two losses for the fighter at one point thought of as the best in the world.

Now Yves looks to turn that around at ElteXC, largely due to his change in training at ATT where previous opponents Aaron Riley, Jorge Masvidal, and Mike Brown all train. This weekend fans get to see the initial results of that change as Yves faces Nick Gonzalez.

KM: How do you feel about your debut in EliteXC this weekend?
YE: I feel good about it. They have a good show, they have a lot of good fighters on the show like Nick Diaz and Jake Shields. I'm looking forward to fighting.

KM: They have some great fighters but aren't really known for the Lightweights. KJ Noons and Nick Diaz are fighting for the 160 pound belt but not 155. How well do you feel you fit in at EliteXC and what are your options?
YE: I like it. I fought at 160 for a while and that is their weight class. My fight here is going to be at 160 and two of my fights in Pride were at 160. It is an easier cut and it isn't too much of a weight advantage. I don't think it is going to pose a problem, I'm just looking forward to fighting. I got with a good team and have a lot of good guys to train with right now. I'm just looking forward to going out there and getting back to it.

KM: I'll get back to ATT in a moment but first are you still under contract to Bodog?
YE: No, I'm no longer under contract to Bodog. I think that is for the best. I like the EliteXC promotion and they are definitely the direction I want to go in.

KM: Is this a one fight or three fight contract with EliteXC?
YE: I have quite a few fights with them.

Shields Predicts Exciting Finish At EliteXC

Posted: 08 Nov 2007 05:38 PM CST

By Damon Martin

As Jake Shields enters the last fight on his current EliteXC contract to take on Mike Pyle, it will not be for a title as the Cesar Gracie-trained student originally thought. But he still plans on bringing an exciting pace to the show and make his opponent pay for taking away the championship opportunity.

"I definitely was ready for a title fight," said Shields. "He took the title away from me by not fighting me (for it). I'm sure he has his reasons. It still kind of pisses me off. I'm going to go out there and take it out on him."

Pyle was not notified of the bout being a five-round title bout until about five weeks prior and determined that wasn't enough training time. He subsequently opted for a three-round non-title fight instead.

Since his last loss in late 2004, Shields has put together eight wins in a row over many top opponents. Lately it seems his motivation has moved to finishing his opponents with punishing stoppages.

"I think I just keep getting better and better and I'm just going out there going for the kill," he said about his dominance of late. "I want to go out there and show people that I can finish people and be exciting and destroy people and that's what I'm going to be doing to Mike Pyle."
