French, Clinton Bout to Highlight May 26th KOTC “Damage Control” Card

King of the Cage has announced several notable fighters will compete at the promotion’s May 26th, “Damage Control” event, which will take place at the UIC Pavillion, in Chicago, Illinois. KOTC Lightweight Champion Clay French (9-2) will take on Buddy Clinton (9-3), in French’s first bout since defeating Mac Danzig for the title by majority decision in January. Clinton has won two fights in a row since he failed in his title bid against Danzig last August, defeating Corey Garner and Donald Sanchez in November and January respectively.

Pride and UFC veteran Jeff Curran (28-8-1) is slated to fight John Mahlow (7-7). Curran has won 3 fights in row since losing to Hatsu Hioki by decision at Bushido 12 last August and most recently, submitted Donny Walker with a 3rd round rear naked choke at KOTC “Hard Knocks” in January. Mahlow will be looking to get back on track, after losing his last 3 bouts in a row.

Another Illinois veteran, Brian Gassaway (23-16-1), will take on Derrick Keasley (4-4). Gassaway is coming off a rear naked choke submission loss to John Alessio at World Extreme Cagefighting 25 in January, while Keasley, recently dropped a unanimous decision loss to Kimo Woelfel at last weekend’s ICON Sport 50.

Bocek Looks to Team Tompkins and Fabio Holanda for Possible Next Opponent

FCF caught up with Mark Bocek after his most recent win last week at King of the Cage Canada’s “Capital City Chaos” event in Hull, Quebec, where the Ontario fighter defeated Garrett Davis in the first round with a rear naked choke. Taking on Davis in the main event, Bocek was able to end the Marcus Soares trained fighter’s 7 fight winning streak to extend his own MMA record to 4-0.

“After I got him down, I tried a little ground and pound and then I stood up,” Bocek says in recalling the fight with Davis. “He kind of kicked me away with his feet on the hips, I kind of just threw his leg by, went to his cross side, turned his knees, took his back and then I sunk in the choke. He’s a tough guy, he’s strong and he fought well.”

After watching his card’s main event, KOTC Promoter Ken Kupsch believes Bocek may be one of the Nation’s better lightweight fighters.

“Davis took this fight on less than two weeks notice after we lost Jake Short to an injury,” says Kupsch in sharing his thoughts on the fight. “Davis is a great fighter and he came to win. By watching the fight, you could tell that Davis is a very skilled fighter, but Bocek is on another level. I don't believe we have a Canadian fighter that can beat him. I expect we will see Bocek take on some of the best ranked KOTC fighters next. We're very proud of both these guys, they are fierce competitors and have determination and ability to rise to the very top.”

The Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu instructor has now defeated Mark Colangelo, Kevin Manderson, John Mahlow and the aforementioned Davis to begin his MMA career, and is looking to take on some of Canada’s more notable lightweights.

“Sam Stout, Mark Hominick, Fabio Holanda, Chris Horodecki,” Bocek tells FCF in listing off some opponents he would like to fight next. “I want to fight any of those guys.”

Most of Bocek’s desired opponents compete for TKO when fighting in Canada, an organization Bocek fought for in his MMA debut. That said, the Ontario fighter has enjoyed his time so far with KOTC Canada, a promotion he has fought for now twice.

“I was treated very well, as always,” Bocek tells FCF. “KOTC is a great event, I like fighting for them and I get along well with Pete Rodley. The attendance was pretty good for a Wednesday night, good energy, can’t wait to do it again.”

Up next, Bocek will head to the Abu Dhabi grappling trials in May, before heading back into grappling competition.

“I’ve got Abu Dhabi coming up in May,” says Bocek. “So that’s the focus now, but after that it’s right back to the MMA. That’s what I love to do, and that’s why I got into this sport.”

BOCEK TAKES TOP SPOT AT KOTC CANADA

By Mike Russell

Given that the King of The Cage Canada’s Capital Chaos was held on a Wednesday night, an attendance number of 1,400 is a decent turnout for an MMA event in any location. Yet, since all of the fights but two didn’t make it past the first round, you’d think that the fight’s organizer Pete Rodley had imposed a 10:00 pm curfew.

That’s not to say that the fights weren’t exciting. There were some highlight reel submissions and some supreme displays of mixed martial artistry unlike the Robert Guertin Arena has ever seen -- a feather in the caps of Rodley and KOTC Canada President Ken Kupsch, who collaboratively put the event together.

The main event featured a showdown between Toronto, Ontario Brazilian jiu-jitsu phenom Mark Bocek, representing the East and Vancouver B.C.’s Garett Davis, an accomplished BJJ practitioner in his own right, representing the West.

Bocek proved why he is regarded as Canada’s top jiu-jitsu fighter. Controlling the fight from the opening stanza, Bocek put on a submission wrestling clinic. If his performance tonight was any indication of how he is to perform in the Abu Dhabi World Submission Championships in May, spectators at the event will need to stand up and pay attention.

A rising star in Canadian MMA, Bocek may already have outgrown the competition in Canada, save fighters like Sam Stout or Mark Hominick, who he recently listed as two of the top four fighters he would like to face in the coming months.

The co-main event featured a match between Saskatchewan Militech Fighter, Elmer Waterhen and Nova Scotia’s TJ Grant. The match would yield the number one contender in KOTC’s welterweight division, securing them a title shot in the near future.

Racking up a seven-second KO in his first KOTC Canada appearance, Waterhen, a former “Champion Fight Club” welterweight champion and “Tuffman Battle of the Battlefords” lightweight champion, was an odds on favorite to win. Grant, however, didn’t check the odds as he finished the fight via his submission of choice - the armbar. Grant has won five out of his last six fights by such means. The other he won by TKO.

Regardless of the means or the method, Grant is now the number-one contender to the vacant KOTC Canada welterweight title and will be facing a yet-to-be-named opponent for the title.

Here is a rundown of tonight’s fare:

MARK BOCEK: CANADIAN MMA’S BEST KEPT SECRET

By Mike Russell

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Phenom Faces Garrett Davis at KOTC Canada Tonight

Chances are, if you follow mixed martial arts in Canada you’ve heard of Mark “Kid Red” Bocek. If you haven’t, don’t worry - you will.

Bocek may be Canadian MMA’s best kept secret. It may be due to his quiet, unassuming demeanor. It may be because he is only three fights into his professional fighting career. Whatever the reason, Bocek says he is ready to prove that he can compete against the top fighters in any organization.

Bocek began his martial arts training in Kempo Karate where he received his black belt. Like many other martial artists at the time who witnessed Royce Gracie’s domination of the competition in the early days of the UFC, the young Torontonian switched his attention to learning Brazilian jiu-jitsu, swiftly becoming the first Canadian-born BJJ black belt and one of the country’s top submission grapplers. Impressive wins over Kurt Pellegrino, Shawn Williams and Cabbage Correira helped solidify Bocek’s place in elite jiu-jitsu circles, but he still found himself having to prove himself to MMA fans in Canada.

“It’s funny. In every MMA fight I’ve had thus far I’ve always been the underdog. It’s always that my opponent is too experienced or he’s had too many fights when it was just my second fight,” Bocek explains. “It doesn’t come down to experience in my opinion. It comes down to the skill and down to what weapons you have in your arsenal and what you can do with them.”

Finding himself in a rut, Bocek decided that the only option for him to bring his training to the next level was to travel to Brazil -- the birthplace of the sport he had adopted as a way of life. Since this original sabbatical trip to Brazil, the Canadian BJJ phenom has made the trek to the South American country several times, spending an entire year training under Joao Roque, from whom he was later awarded his black belt and instructor bars.

Never one to take his challenger lightly, Bocek sees his next opponent, Garrett Davis, who he is set to face tonight in King of The Cage Canada’s latest installment, “Capital Chaos,” as another obstacle in his way to becoming a champion.

For Bocek, the obstacles and the championships seem to be getting bigger. After winning the North American Abu Dhabi qualifier tournament last October without having a single point scored against him in any of his four matches, Bocek has been pushed into the top ten of the 66-77kg class at the ADCC championships in May. Other notables fighters in the class include Renzo Gracie, Marcelo Garcia and Andre Galvao – all of whom Bocek feels he can defeat.

“I’ve seen a lot of these guys around for a long time through gi tournaments and no gi tournaments and Renzo used to be my instructor. I got my blue belt from him in New York when I was sixteen,” says Bocek. “I think I’ll have an edge over these guys in wrestling and I think I’ll be able to use that to my advantage in the Abu Dhabi setting of the rules.”

Should Bocek win tonight, King of the Cage management have discussed the possibility of his next fight being a title shot against KOTC U.S. Lightweight Champion Mac Danzig. The organization had a difficult time finding a Canadian opponent for the feared submission specialist, eventually deciding on Michigan native Jake Short, who was replaced by Davis due to an injury.

“I think a lot of guys have seen me around for a while and even though I don’t have many [MMA] fights they know that maybe I can put them in some positions that they might not feel comfortable in so they’d rather fight someone else,” speculates Bocek. “I just want to keep being active in MMA and to get to be in the upper echelon of MMA competition.”

Training students at Kombat Arts Academy in Mississauga, Ontario when he isn’t training himself, Bocek doesn’t hesitate in reciting his list of fighters he would like to face. Although some might consider his opponent wish list to be somewhat lofty, “Kid Red” believes that his time has come to show the world what he can do.

“In Canada I’d like to face Fabio Holanda, Sam Stout, Mark Hominick,” says Bocek. “In the world, Sean Sherk.”

Diaz Enjoying Life as KOTC World Flyweight Champion

FCF caught up with Gibson Pankration fighter Ryan Diaz last week to get his thoughts on his recent championship victory over Ed Newalu at King of the Cage “Chaos” on March 10th. Diaz submitted Newalu in the first round at 3:11 to lay claim to the KOTC World Flyweight Championship. Diaz had been scheduled to fight Manny Tapia, however the former champ relinquished his KOTC title to pursue opportunities elsewhere. Diaz says he knew that he was still in for a tough fight, despite the change in opponent.

“Yes,” Diaz tells FCF in acknowledging he expected Newalu to be a worthy adversary. “I knew he was going to take me down and was going be a tough and strong opponent. I had attempted 3 armbars and on two occasions I got slammed on my head. So after the third attempt I heard Lance Gibson yell to go for triangle. I went for it and remember squeezing so hard and thinking I’m not going to let go even if my legs cramp up and fall off!”

The win extends Diaz’s record to 13-10, and adds a second KOTC title to his collection, as the Port Moody fighter is also KOTC Canada’s Bantamweight Champion (145 lbs.)

“It’s a great feeling and makes it feel like hardwork does pay off,” says Diaz in discussing his recent title win. “Now I want to focus on exposing myself to the whole world and letting everyone know how exciting a fighter I am. Last words, I want to thank my trainer Lance Gibson for sticking by me all the years and my family, my fans, and all my friends that have stuck by me all the years. And of course my sponsors Sinister Skin Tatoo and Sacred Souls Clothing.”

Interview with 4-0 KOTC fighter Ernie Perea

By Bernie Calderon

It's early Saturday morning at a local Marie Calendars and I am awaiting King of the Cage fighter Ernie Perea to show up for our interview. To my surprise, a cameraman is setting up to film our interview. Ernie walks in and tells me a documentary is being filmed and he is a part of it. Ernie is gracious enough to sit down with me and talk about his last fight, his side projects, and the next KOTC event.

BC: Last we heard of you in MMA, you won the KOTC Super Fight by submission over Albert Hill. What have you been up to since then?
EP: Healing up, working, and spending some of that money I earned from my fights in 06 on my daughters’ quads.

BC: How do you feel about fighting in front of your law enforcement buddies and co-workers? Any added pressure?
EP: Yeah, it’s some added pressure. I would be lying if I said I don’t worry about it. But, fortunately things have been working out, and I have been winning. I don’t really realize what I had just done after my fights, until my home and cell phone start blowing up with calls from my friends and people who care about me.

BC: That match against Hill was one fans had been waiting for, so why were you disappointed?
EP: I fought like crap. I fought going backwards and I paid for it. Hill hit me harder than I had ever been hit during an MMA fight. I had two huge grapefruit size bruises on my ribs/kidney area for like three weeks after our fight. I hurt my back bad during that fight. I couldn’t get up or get Hill into my guard. It could of turned out real bad for me. I was lucky to win by choke. Hill’s record may not show it, but he is one tough guy to beat.

BC: What did your supervisors say when you come strolling back to work Monday morning?
EP: Without saying a word to me my supervisor walked up, grabbed my chin, moved it to the right, then to the left, and said; “Glad to see you are in one piece knuckle head, it looked bad for you for a minute!”

BC: You are known as "The Real Law" around the fight scene. Where did you get that nickname?
EP: Tyson Johnson at the Universal Grappling Academy gave it to me. I tried talking him out of it, but he just kept calling me it. As we were training for my fights, he would throw me around the gym and use phrases like, “What Mr. Officer man, you gonna quit, you gonna give up as you are fighting for your life on the street, let the bad guys hurt you.” Tyson can get into my head and push me to do my best. I guess he can call me anything he wants!

CANADAS PRODIGY TAKES THE NEXT STEP

Mark Bocek Vs Jake Short (155 lbs)

In being every promoters dream, Mark Bocek has quickly become every promoter’s nightmare because after only 3 pro MMA fights, he has become a fighter that other Canadian 155 pound athletes will not face. “Ken and I have gone through our phone books from coast to coast with the same reply. It was obvious to us that Mr. Bocek has already bypassed the Canadian level and will compete at the KOTC world level. On January 20th he faced a top ranked John Mahlow, a fighter with tons of experience who took Mac Danzig to the limit, and Bocek made victory look easy in there. “Turns out the task to find Mark a worthy opponent was only a phone call away when Detroit’s Jake Short was approached. With wins over such notables as UFC TUF vet Melvin Guillard and Forrest Petz, Jake has impressed many MMA insiders while earning a 10-7 pro MMA record. Jake is looking to climb his way up to a KOTC 155 title shot and see’s a win over the highly touted Bocek as the ideal way to achieve just that!

WHO IS NEXT IN LINE AT 170 LBS?

TJ Grant VS. Elmer Waterhen (170 lbs)

At KOTC: Freedom Fight 2007 TJ Grant completely dominated the then undefeated Nick Portieous improving his Pro MMA record to 5-0. With this performance he solidified his place in the KOTC 170 pound rankings. Known for his vicious slams, aggressive stand up strikes and efficient ground game, TJ is now ready to start looking at a KOTC title opportunity. In central Canada, Elmer Waterhen has built himself quite the reputation as a crafty scrapper while racking up a solid 4-2 pro MMA record. On March 28 these two warriors will battle it out to determine who is next in line for a shot at the KOTC 170 Canadian title.

YOUR FAVORITE KOTC FIGHTERS RETURN

THE ANIMAL VS. THE MONSTER

John THE ANIMAL Cole VS. Jason THE MONSTER Bissonnette (205 lbs)

It took only 22 seconds for John Cole to take care of business in his KOTC debut and silence the critics who felt that his karate background would not benefit him in the cage. He returns to take on RONIN MMA newcomer Jason Bissonnette. The MONSTER was scheduled to make his KOTC debut at FREEDOM FIGHT 2007 however when his opponent failed to show up for the fight, he was temporarily sidelined. Now he gets his chance in this LHW clash.

THE NINJA OF LOVE VS. THE PITBULL

Nick NINJA OF LOVE Denis VS. Chris THE PITBULL Myra (145 lbs)

At Januarys KOTC event RONIN MMA fighter Nick Denis beat his opponent at his own game with an impressive arm bar victory in the first round. Earning acknowledgement in local media such as THE OTTAW SUN, Denis is looking to climb the KOTC 145 pound ranks. In his way is a freestyle fighter from the Petewawa Military base named Chris THE PITBULL Myra. Myra brings vast combat experience and ferocity to the cage and feels he has what it takes to end the Ninjas winning streak.

LOCAL FAVORITE SET TO ENDURE A DOG BITE

Stephane Lamarche VS. CUJO White (170 lbs)

RONIN MMA fighter Stephane Lamarche entered the cage at KOTC: FREEDOM FIGHT 2007 where he slammed and powered his way to victory over the tough Garrett Venroy. Continuing his undefeated record the Ottawa native immediately called to see who is next in line for him. Oneida warrior CUJO White amazed everyone who witnessed his brutal display at the MMA bouts which occurred on the Oneida reserve last December. Despite a 40 pound weight difference CUJO left his opponent unconscious in the middle of the cage. Both are looking to remain undefeated and work their way closer to title contention but only one will advance.

A SOLID UNDERCARD OF KOTC ATHLETES

The return of Barry MACKDADDY FLEXX McDonald (150 lbs)

The long awaited debut of Mackdaddy Flexx was cut short by Sudbury fighter Derek Giroux but McDonald immediately called for a shot against another striker who will stand and bang with him. Look for fireworks when the eccentric one re enters the cage to face super striker Jesse James Green!!

Jean Marc THE SHARK Lalonde VS. Paul Ebejer (155 lbs)

In what was arguably the fight of the night at FREEDOM FIGHT 2007, Brett Portieous made a triumphant debut with a TKO win over the highly touted Jean Marc Lalonde. Unfortunately Brett is not available to compete until the next KOTC event however the18 year old SHARK is ready willing and able to enter the cage once again to entertain his fans. He faces Toronto striker Paul Ebejer.

The long awaited MMA debut of Eric Muir (170 lbs)

For quite some time there have been rumblings of this “crazy aggressive fighter who could pass as a twin of Hollywood Star Vin Diesel”. Our offices were told of a new Bruckmann MMA/ Franco Behring fighter who is destined to dominate the 170 pound weight class and finally, on March 28, we will have the opportunity to see for ourselves. He faces a knock out artist named Topper Greene.

PLUS

Markaille SHOWTIME Wedderburn VS Jason Motard (185 lbs)
Showtime is looking to let his hands fly against FIT MMA owner Jason Motard. Both guys are physical specimens and always bring maximum excitement to the cage.
