Julie Kedzie, Renaissance Woman.

One of the ways in which covering mixed martial arts is so fascinating is that the athletes themselves are so hard to peg down. That is, in terms of personalities, life experiences and resumes, you don’t find too many mold-fitting clichés in the forms of MMA athletes.

Chuck Liddell studied accounting, Mirko “CroCop” Filipovic is a member of the Croatian Parliament and Julie Kedzie has an English literature degree from the University of Indiana and can quote Shakespeare.

On Saturday, February 10th, the twenty-five year old Kedzie will become one of the first MMA fighters to compete on a card shown on a premium cable network, as she takes on Gina Carano on the EliteXC event airing on Showtime. Many fighters on the card are looking at this event as a big step for MMA, and so is Kedzie, with the added incentive of possibly advancing women fighters in particular.
