Mentally refreshed, physically prepared, “Mayhem” Miller readies for ICON Sport fight
By Elias Cepeda
As quickly as he was up, Jason “Mayhem” Miller found himself back down. After winning the ICON Sport Middleweight championship with a dramatic come from behind submission victory over Robbie Lawler last September, Miller lost the belt in his first title defense to Frank Trigg on December 1st, 2006.
Unfortunately “Mayhem’s” troubles also extended beyond the ring as at that time he was also facing charges of first-degree burglary, third-degree assault and fourth-degree criminal property damage for allegedly kicking in the door of his girlfriend’s apartment and assaulting a man inside. Now with a return bout scheduled for March 31st, his first since losing to Trigg, Miller says his problems, both personal and professional are behind him.
On December 22, 2006, Miller was acquitted of all charges in a circuit court, and with a clear head for the first time in a long time; “Mayhem” has gotten back to being able to focus on his training. A regimen, Miller says that allowed him to win the ICON title to begin with.
“I’m getting back to what helped me beat Lawler and take care of all that business” says “Mayhem” one March afternoon from Temecula California where he has been training with Dan Henderson’s Team Quest. “I’m really getting my training back to where it should have been.”
The difference for Miller, he says, is direction. He says he’s more successful when he hands over his training camp to coaches instead of trying to direct it all himself as he did before his loss to Trigg.
“I shouldn't have been trying to steer my own training. It’s easier to put to the training in the hands of my coaches” says Miller.
“No matter how hard you push yourself, and I push myself really hard, if you have someone yelling in your face telling you to bring it to the next level, there is no substitute for that. It needs to be consistent” Miller asserts.
And with a proper training camp under his belt to prepare him for his March 31st ICOn Sport bout against Hector Urbina at the Blaisdell Center Arena in Hawaii , Miller is eager to jump back in the ring.
“It’s about damn time! Let’s do this and get 2007 under way. A fighter who's not fighting is f_king not a fighter” exclaims “Mayhem”.
