“Babalu” Signs With Xcess Fighting - 01 Nov 2007 10:53:05pm

Posted: 01 Nov 2007 05:53 PM CDT

By MMA Junkie

Renato "Babalu" Sobral, a former UFC fighter who was booted from the organization after a controversial finish to his UFC 74 fight with David Heath, has signed a non-exclusive deal with the Xcess Fighting organization.

He'll make his debut with Xcess Fighting at a Dec. 12 event, the organization today announced. It'll be Sobral's first fight since UFC 74.

After dominating much of his Aug. 25 bout with Heath, Sobral secured a fight-ending anaconda choke in the second round. However, after Heath tapped, Sobral refused to break the hold, even as referee Steve Mazzagatti tugged on his arm. Three to four seconds passed before Sobral finally broke his grip. The Nevada State Athletic Commission eventually fined Sobral $25,000 (half his fight purse) but didn't hand down a suspension.

Fighters train in house of god - 01 Nov 2007 10:43:37pm

Posted: 01 Nov 2007 05:43 PM CDT

By Justine Glucina

It was love at first sight for Mika Hoera. Walking out of his first brazilian jiu-jitsu class two years ago, the 33-year-old builder resolved to carve a career in martial arts. Last week he grappled, choked and crushed his way to victory at New Zealand's first major international cage fighting event.

And the Onehunga resident credits his success to training at a Panmure church. "We have the coolest setup in the whole country," Mr Hoera says.

"We train in God's house."

Tom Junior Ngapera is both a pastor-in-training at the Faith Family Baptist Centre and promoter of Hextreme Events that brought Carnage in the Cage to New Zealand. For the past four years Mr Ngapera has taught the art of mixed martial arts (MMA) within church grounds with commonwealth wrestlers, world-class kickboxers and internationally renowned jiu-jitsu experts.

"It's full-on because sometimes you'll have a full-blown church service in one room and people trying to bash the bejeezuz out of each other in the next," he laughs.

Demian psyched for Super Challenge - 01 Nov 2007 10:14:17pm

Posted: 01 Nov 2007 05:14 PM CDT

After winning the prize for best submission of the evening in his debut fight at UFC 77, last October 20th, ADCC 2007 under 87kg champion, Demian Maia wants the title of greatest grappler in the world, by winning the Super Challenge Grappling event. The event, to take place in Sao Paulo on December 8, will bring together eight Brazilian fighters and eight foreigners in an absolute dispute. Demian promises to bring the same game he showed at the ADCC and UFC this year.

"I come from Jiu-Jitsu and am always going for the submission. I feel honored for having been invited to Super Challenge Grappling, mainly because it is a tournament with no weight limits and I will be one of the lightest in the dispute. And the fact that I'm an ADCC champion greatens my responsibility. The names confirmed already are really tough and I need that to keep progressing," commented Demian.

Among the adversaries he could have to face at Super Challenge Grappling are the already confirmed Jeff Monson, 2007 ADCC absolute champion Robert Drysdale, also 2007 ADCC champion Fabricio Werdum, the Jiu-Jitsu and submission grappling phenomenon Ronaldo Jacare. The organization promises to announce more names later this week.

Matt Serra blog on Tuf 6 Episode 7 - 01 Nov 2007 09:39:49pm

Posted: 01 Nov 2007 04:39 PM CDT

By Matt Serra
UFC Welterweight champion

I really thought the way Matt Hughes dumped on Daniel Barrera after last week's fight was awful. The accusations Matt made about Barrera being scared were off base. Barrera, what he lacked in skill, he made up for in heart and effort. He wasn't scared. He ate a ton of shots. He's new to this, and you have to expect some growing pains in this sport.

I think Hughes is taking the fights on this show a little too personally. It should be all about the guys on his team competing and leaving here better fighters, not about his name in the center of the Octagon. He said it on an earlier episode, "I'm really competitive, and if I can't win, I won't play." Saying he wanted to leave the show because he was so frustrated sounds like he doesn't want to play anymore.

His temper tantrum aimed towards Blake Bowman aside, Mac Danzig showed a great deal of maturity in dealing with his teammates to this point. Ray Longo said it best when we were watching the episode this week – Mac could have, and maybe should have, been the coach of that team. He handled the guys way better than Hughes ever could in the face of mounting adversity.

Fans Unhappy With Kimbo Slice's Opponent, They Still Want Tank! - 01 Nov 2007 09:30:27pm

Posted: 01 Nov 2007 04:30 PM CDT

By Fightlinker

The moment CFFC's Kimbo vs Tank fight got canceled, everyone across the internets called out to promotions around the world to save the headlining fight. Several promotions answered the call and tried to fit it into their cards, but in the end it was EliteXC that signed Kimbo Slice and set him up to fight on their November 10th card.

Without Tank Abbott.

Huh? What? That's stupid. CFFC had already spent a big pile of money advertising the Tank matchup, and it was a fight that resonated with the moron demographic and freak fight fans. Why EliteXC decided to drop Tank from the equation is unknown.

Whatever the reason, it was fucking dumb. In his place, EliteXC put 8-11 fighter Mike Bourke, who's been 1-8 over the past 5 years. Tank's recent record was 1-6 over the past 5 years, but at least he had some decent draw and name power. Add the fact that EliteXC has been promoting Kimbo as 'Kevin Ferguson', and most casual fans have no idea what the fuck is going on any more.

Steroids And IGF-1 Is The Performance Enhancing Drugs - 01 Nov 2007 09:17:25pm

Posted: 01 Nov 2007 04:17 PM CDT

As the world has finally caught on to the fact that world-class athletes from all sports have been using steroids and other performance enhancing drugs (PEDs), the athletes themselves have moved on to the next generation of substances. And they won't be caught anytime soon. Bear with me for a minute and I'll explain. Well, I'll attempt to explain. But before I start explaining that, I want to explain this. This article is not an attempt to justify the use of existing PEDs, nor is this a justification for using the next generation of PEDs. This is simply a matter of recognizing that these substances are out there and that people are using them, and will not only continue to use them but will forever seek out new and better substances to use.

This piece represents acknowledgement of a reality. You can be against the use of all forms of PEDs, but this doesn't mean you can ignore the fact that these substances are being used. Steroids represent the Stone Age with regards to these drugs and Bill Romanowski, Jason Giambi, Jose Canseco, Gary Sheffield and Barry Bonds and his trainer Greg Anderson are primitive cavemen. The drugs these guys used - even Human Growth Hormone - and the archaic and ham-fisted manner in which these guys used steroids are embarrassing.

The Balco Labs scandal publicized the fact that underground labs - "UG labs" - exist and have the sole purpose of synthesizing drugs that cannot be detected and/or cannot be acquired legitimately.

Freddie Roach Speaks On Jermain Taylor Training Rumor - 01 Nov 2007 08:49:01pm

Posted: 01 Nov 2007 03:49 PM CDT

By Gabriel Montoya

Moments ago, Doghouseboxing.com's Gabriel Montoya spoke with world class trainer Freddie Roach regarding the rumor that he will replace Manny Steward as former Middleweight Champ Jermain Taylor's trainer.

Gabriel Montoya: Hi Freddie. There are rumors floating that you will be replacing Manny Steward as Jermain Taylor's trainer. Is this true?

Freddie Roach: No. I got a call from Ozell [Nelson, Taylor's advisor] a few days ago and he asked me if I was interested. I said sure. That's the last I have heard of it.

GM: How long ago was that?

FR: Ummm... 5 or 7 days ago. I told them to call my agent, Nick Conn who works for ICM. I don't like to negotiate like that.

GM: You mean over the phone?
FR: Yeah. Nick's a lawyer who hates being a lawyer so he's my agent. He's more of a friend, really. I let him handle all that stuff. I have too many other things to worry about.

GM: So would you be interested in training Jermain?
FR: Sure. I'd love to. But really that is the last I heard of it so I don't know anything more. I'll let you know if I hear anything. (Laughs) You let me know if you hear anything.

GM: (laughing) Will do, Freddie. Thanks.
FR: Anytime.

Wanderlei Silva's Jiu-Jitsu coach, Andre Galvao analyses the transition from gentle art to MMA

After his abrupt move to help out his new "boss," the 2005 Jiu-Jitsu world champion, Andre Galvao has settled down in his new home. Now living with his wife and daughter in Las Vegas, the Brazilian has been making an effort to add polish to Wand's ground game, without neglecting his own career as an MMA fighter. The Brasa black belt spoke with GRACIEMAG.com about his training, in Jiu-Jitsu and MMA, and that of the axe murderer, check it out:

GRACIEMAG.com: How did the offer to be Wand's ground fighting coach come about?

Andre Galvao: Once, Wanderlei Silva saw me in a magazine in three different championships. During last year's Worlds, which he followed closely, I had a great fight with Nino Schembri [Galvao submitted him in little over a minute]. He always saw how I am very dedicated and always liked my style. That's why he invited me to be his Jiu-Jitsu coach when he came to live in the United States. I, on the other hand, have wanted to make the transition to MMA for a long time. I've been training boxing and no-gi Jiu-Jitsu for some time. When the offer came about, along with a series of great possibilities, I accepted. It was a fit from God.

A Life Transformed - 01 Nov 2007 07:38:52pm

Posted: 01 Nov 2007 02:38 PM CDT

By Chris Yucus

Entry into the world of mixed martial arts was a way for Jay Hieron to cope with troubling times. After years of finding solace in wrestling, a sport at which he excelled, Hieron walked away. He left the wrestling team at Hofstra University because of conflicts with the coach. He thought he had "wasted his whole life wrestling."

Dark days would follow Hieron's departure from the amateur wrestling arena, as his environment and disillusionment transformed the world around him. "I wasn't from the best neighborhood," says Hieron, a Long Island native, "and I fell into the wrong path." Before long, he found himself with legal problems after an arrest for selling narcotics.

By then, Hieron had already been introduced to MMA. High school friend and Nassau Junior College teammate Phil Baroni had asked Hieron to help him train for a match with former Olympic silver medalist Matt Lindland at UFC 34. Hieron accepted Baroni's invitation.

"At that point I wasn't interested in fighting MMA," Hieron says. "I was just helping him."

Chris Horodecki on Fight Network Radio, Friday at 3pm EST - 01 Nov 2007 07:31:31pm

Posted: 01 Nov 2007 02:31 PM CDT

By Brian Knapp

Undefeated International Fight League lightweight contender Chris Horodecki will join host Mauro Ranallo on FIGHT NETWORK RADIO (Sirius Channel 186) at 3 PM EST/12 PM PST Friday.

Horodecki (10-0, 6-0 IFL) will collide with Bart Palaszewski in the semi-finals of the IFL World Grand Prix this Saturday at the Sears Centre in Chicago. The 20-year-old Canadian defeated Palaszewski by controversial split decision in February, which sets up the most anticipated rematch in IFL history.

Arguably the team-based promotion's most marketable commodity, Horodecki last competed at IFL Seattle in June, as he defeated Shad Lierley by unanimous decision in one of the year's most-talked-about fights. He was forced to withdraw from the IFL Semi-finals with a hand injury.

Update on Martin "the HItman" Kampmann - 01 Nov 2007 06:40:23pm

Posted: 01 Nov 2007 01:40 PM CDT

By Arias Garcia Jr.

It was matter of unfortunate circumstances. On the cusp of the biggest fight of his career, Martin Kampmann suffered a devastating knee injury during training that forced him to withdraw from his UFC 72 bout with former UFC Middleweight Champion, Rich Franklin in June of 2007. In a bout that could have catapulted him to the top of the middleweight rankings, Yushin Okami stepped in and lost a decision.

Franklin's next opponent was a rematch with the current champion, Anderson Silva. That title shot could have belonged to Kampmann, but with battles with Crafton Wallace, Thales Leites, and Drew McFedries, all victories, in the UFC, he will not let a knee injury hinder his dream to be a champion in the UFC. Kampmann, who trains with the likes of Randy Couture, Tyson Griffin, and Mike Pyle at Extreme Couture in Las Vegas, hopes to return to the cage in early 2008 and put his name back in title contention. After successful knee surgery in September, Kampmann looks to rehabilitate his knee and take it easy on the advice of doctors. ADCC News contacted Kampmann for an update on his injury and he gave the following statement.

"I'm still in physiotherapy right now, and don't know when I'll return or against who. My goal is beginning of 2008 but it depends on the knee. Still only 5 months out. Doctors keep telling me to take it easy. Knee is still only about 60%.

But I can't wait to get back in the cage!"

Frustration Mounts For Sherk - 01 Nov 2007 02:23:26pm

Posted: 01 Nov 2007 09:23 AM CDT

By Tom Hamlin

LOS ANGELES – Any idea that Ultimate Fighting Championship lightweight champion Sean Sherk's appeal would be an easily executed line item in the California State Athletic Commission's agenda was dispelled Tuesday in a Los Angeles hearing room.

On July 19, the CSAC suspended Sherk for one year and fined him $2,500 after he tested positive for Nandrolone Metabolite, an anabolic agent.

He had been charged to appear in front of the commission after filing an extension with the CSAC in early August. He enlisted Los Angeles-based lawyer Howard Jacobs, who has been the defense attorney in several high-profile doping cases, to defend him.

Jacobs wasted no time in attacking the foundation of the claims made against Sherk. First on his list was the "chain of custody" for the urine sample taken by the CSAC after the July 7 fight. Deputy Attorney General Karen Chappelle had established the commission's procedural diligence in dealing with the sample as a primary piece of evidence against Sherk.

Kimbo Slice is ready to take on Cantrell - or anyone else - 01 Nov 2007 12:58:36pm

Posted: 01 Nov 2007 07:58 AM CDT

By Matt Young

CORPUS CHRISTI — The Internet world already knows Kimbo Slice can be entertaining on a computer monitor. During a Wednesday conference call, Kimbo proved he can be just as entertaining over the phone.

Now, EliteXC mixed martial arts promoters hope Kimbo will be even more entertaining Nov. 10 at the American Bank Center. Kimbo was scheduled to fight Mike Bourke (8-11-1), but Bourke pulled out after separating his shoulder Sunday.

Kimbo's new opponent is Bo Cantrell (10-10) of Citrus Heights, Calif. Cantrell has lost his past four fights. "I train to fight, so I'll fight anybody," Kimbo said. "I wasn't training for anyone in particular, so I'll fight anyone."

That was one of the most tame things Kimbo said during the conference call. A sampling of his spicier takes included this offering when asked what will make him so tough in the cage:

"If you're going to put me in an arm bar, you're going to have to break that (expletive) off, because I don't know what tapping out is."

Former FBI Director Jumping Into MMA - 01 Nov 2007 12:17:53pm

Posted: 01 Nov 2007 07:17 AM CDT

By Bill Vilona

His former colleagues at the FBI nearly flipped when Dave Szady revealed his new career. Say what? Director of an organization? The World Alliance of Mixed Martial Arts, designed to unify and govern mixed martial arts fight competition?

"Their reaction has been intriguing," laughed Szady, former FBI assistant director of counter-intelligence. "They've said, 'We've seen all kind of jobs that retired FBI directors have taken, but we've never seen anything like this.'

"But after they think about it, they'll agree it makes perfect sense. I have complete integrity."

Szady and his partners, who include Pensacola attorney Fred Levin and Pensacola resident Kay Stephenson, the former Buffalo Bills head coach, hope officials with various MMA organizations will concur.

The group will formally announce its intention of WAMMA during a news conference Nov. 14 in New York City. The objective is to produce a sanctioning organization to rank mixed martial arts fighters across the globe and set up a system to create world title bouts.

Mixed martial arts, which began in the U.S. with the Ultimate Fighting Championship and is now in its 15th year, has taken a meteoric rise in popularity. The combined revenue of pay-per-view events in 2006 was $223 million. In contrast, professional boxing events last year took in $177 million.

Team Hughes Profile – Jared Rollins - 01 Nov 2007 12:12:23pm

Posted: 01 Nov 2007 07:12 AM CDT

By Thomas Gerbasi

Jared Rollins is a full-time fighter. Despite the hardships of having to make ends meet in the months and years before the big money hopefully hits, the welterweight prospect carries on, knowing that only with complete and unwavering dedication will he reach his goals in mixed martial arts.

Plus, for Rollins – a graduate of Chapman University with a Bachelors Degree in Advertising – the 9 to 5 world is simply not for him.

"I went through the corporate thing, I worked for a company, and it sucked," he admits. "My mind wasn't even there half the time because I was training in the PM, and working in the AM, and my mind was thinking about fighting. And the people there were talking to me about fighting. I think that's kinda what drove me back. Maybe if they weren't so in awe of it and talking about it, maybe I would have stayed."

Matt Hughes' Blog - Week Seven - 01 Nov 2007 12:00:51pm

Posted: 01 Nov 2007 07:00 AM CDT

By Matt Hughes

I was pretty frustrated with all the losses we've taken so far. I don't know if I was ready to walk away because, kinda like I said on the show, anybody can quit. It takes a man to stay in someplace when he doesn't want to be there. I wasn't gonna quit, but I wanted to express to my team that they need to shape up and that they need to start giving it 100 percent. Some of them were quiet when I spoke to them, but I did feel that I was getting a hold of them and I felt like I was doing my job as a coach, I really did.

Mac Danzig wasn't too happy with the way I was coming down on the team, and he expressed that on this week's show. I'm glad that Mac has his own opinion and I think he did a heck of a job on this show being a teammate. After watching this episode, I'm really happy with Mac. I could care less that he didn't understand what I was doing; that doesn't bother me a bit. What I was glad to see was that he was there for his team, and I was glad to see that transition in him.

But when it comes to my motivation this season, I admit I'm motivated in any type of competition, whatever it might be, but my number one priority here is to get somebody into the finals. My number two priority is to make the guys better fighters for down the road. After those priorities are met, then comes my personal competition with Matt Serra, the guy who's been saying this and that about me.

Antonio "Pezao" Silva to EliteXC - 01 Nov 2007 11:40:46am

Posted: 01 Nov 2007 06:40 AM CDT

Brazilian recovered and has permission to fight again

Not having fought since February, the American Top Team fighter Antonio "Pezao" Silva (9w, 1l) already has a date set for his return to the octagon. The battle is set for November 10 in the state of Texas and will be for the event EliteXC.

The giant of 1.95 meters and 135 kg will finally face the American Jonathan Wiezorek (11w and 1l), after being prohibited from fighting him at K-1 Dynamite USA in June by the Athletic Commission of the State of California, for alleged health problems relating to gigantism and a tumor in the fighter's head. Better now, Pezao, has lost weight and managed to get back his license to fight around three weeks ago.

The Headhunter Speaks! - 01 Nov 2007 11:27:22am

Posted: 01 Nov 2007 06:27 AM CDT

By Robert Rousseau

Sometimes nicknames just don't fit. However, when it comes to Paul "The Headhunter" Buentello, the term 'Headhunter' fits just fine. After all, he isn't much for takedowns, as you'll soon hear. And his 23-9 record was formed on the basis of 16 (T)KO's. What's more, he holds seven submission victories, four of which were due to fight-ending strikes.

So as Buentello gets ready to take on Alistair Overeem -- an outstanding striker in his own right -- at the Strikeforce: Four Men Enter, One Man Survives event on November 16th, MMAFighting.com's Robert Rousseau got the chance to pick his brain for awhile concerning his upcoming fight and more.

MMAFighting.com: How's training been going?
Paul Buentello: Very good. I'm actually in Albuquerque, New Mexico at Greg Jackson's Gym getting some high altitude training.

MMAFighting.com: That's awesome. Who have you been training with?

Paul Buentello: Rashad Evans, Keith Jardine, Mike Seal. . . This guy from England, he's pretty sharp. A big light heavyweight named Tom Kong. This guy's a beast.

‘Showtime' for Kimbo, Noons - 01 Nov 2007 11:20:16am

Posted: 01 Nov 2007 06:20 AM CDT

By Jake Rossen

As EliteXC's first year as premium cable's only MMA attraction draws to a close, company president Gary Shaw and a host of athletes sat in on a telephone conference Wednesday to discuss EliteXC: Renegade, a Showtime offering set for Nov. 10 at 10 p.m. EST.

Of the attractions slated for the card, which will be broadcast from the American Bank Center in Corpus Christi, Texas, most intriguing was Kevin "Kimbo Slice" Ferguson.

Slice gained infamy for a series of Internet videos depicting him in bare-knuckle brawls, a life he professed to have left behind the minute his exhibition MMA bout with Ray Mercer headlined a Cage Fury Fighting Championships card on June 23.

He was expected to face veteran David "Tank" Abbott for the CFFC in October. After CFFC chairs canceled the event, Slice signed with EliteXC.

Originally set to oppose Mike Bourke, who dropped out Monday with a shoulder injury, the reformed street fighter will now face Bo Cantrell.

"I thank God you guys were able to come through and snatch me up," Slice said, referring to Shaw and the Abbott debacle. "I was upset I wasn't going to get a chance to fight…. Sometimes I get tears in my eyes when s--t don't work out and I can't get a fight."

Phil Baroni Back In December! - 01 Nov 2007 11:13:38am

Posted: 01 Nov 2007 06:13 AM CDT

By Brian Knapp & Loretta Hunt

The California State Athletic Commission voted 3-2 at a hearing today in Los Angeles to reduce middleweight brawler Phil Baroni's suspension for suspected steroid use from one year to six months. Baroni, who was also fined $2,500 by the commission, will remain suspended through Saturday, Dec. 22. One board member abstained from voting.

The commission struck down two previous motions, one to uphold the original one-year suspension and another for dismissal.

The 31-year-old tested positive for two anabolic agents – Boldenone Metabolite and Stanozolol Metabolite – after his submission loss to Frank Shamrock in a Strikeforce middleweight championship bout June 22 in San Jose, Calif.

Once considered one of the bright young stars at 185 pounds, Baroni (10-8) has lost seven of his past 12 fights. Known for his brash pre-fight antics, he holds first-round stoppage victories over Amar Suloev, Ryo Chonan, ex-King of Pancrase Yuki Kondo and former UFC middleweight champion Dave Menne; his fight with Menne at UFC 39 lasted just 18 seconds.

Yamamoto to miss nationals - 01 Nov 2007 02:12:43am

Posted: 31 Oct 2007 09:12 PM CDT

TOKYO — Norifumi "Kid" Yamamoto, who has been aiming to compete in next year's Beijing Olympics, will miss the wrestling national championships to concentrate on his career as a mixed martial arts fighter, his management office said Wednesday.

Skipping the nationals in December means Yamamoto's chances of competing in next year's Beijing Olympics have all but been dashed, since the tournament is considered a stepping stone for the Olympic qualifiers next spring. Yamamoto returned to wrestling after a seven-year absence in the men's 60-kilogram category at the nationals in January this year, but suffered a dislocated shoulder in a loss in the quarterfinals.

Sherk Decision Delayed - 01 Nov 2007 01:52:19am

By Brian Knapp & Loretta Hunt

CSAC Postpones Ruling on UFC Lightweight King Until Nov. 13

The California State Athletic Commission today delayed a decision regarding the steroid-related suspension and fine for UFC lightweight champion Sean Sherk during a nearly four-hour-long hearing in Los Angeles. The fate of the 34-year-old Minnesotan – who tested positive for the banned anabolic agent Nandrolone Metabolite following his successful title defense against Hermes Franca at UFC 73 in July – will be decided when the commission reconvenes at 1:30 PM PT Tuesday, Nov. 13.

The CSAC made the decision to delay a ruling on Sherk after commissioner Julio Ramirez expressed concern over a 17-page brief from Howard Jacobs, Sherk's attorney. The brief, which included 20 exhibits, never reached the seven CSAC members charged with voting. Jacobs sent the brief to the CSAC at 6:15 PM PT Friday and indicated he had been provided with an acknowledgement of receipt by CSAC executive director Armando Garcia, CSAC associate governmental program analyst Bill Douglas and Karen Chappelle – the deputy attorney general for the state of California.

Prior to announcing the postponement, the CSAC forced Sherk and two other defendants – all of whom tested positive for steroids over the summer – to sit through three separate presentations regarding steroid use.

EliteXC to Implement New Weight Classes - 01 Nov 2007 01:41:34am

Posted: 31 Oct 2007 08:41 PM CDT

EliteXC President Gary Shaw announced today that the promotion will implement new weight classes to improve the safety of its competitors.

"I am very concerned in the mixed martial arts world of this drastic cutting of weight," said Shaw. "Fighters can fit better in these weight classes and fight for world titles without endangering their health."

EliteXC will remove the 155-pound weight class and add 140, 150 and 160-pound divisions. The company's weight classes are now: 140, 150, 160, 170, 185, 205, 265 and 265+ pounds.

Champions will be crowned in each weight class.

Rashad Evans Looks Forward To Bisping Clash - 01 Nov 2007 01:33:51am

Posted: 31 Oct 2007 08:33 PM CDT

By Mick Bower

Rashad Evans is expecting fireworks when he fights Michael Bisping at UFC 78: Validation. Although he expects the Briton to improve on his last performance, Evans is confident of victory. Evans told the Daily Star he is not underestimating Bisping:

"The minute you start thinking along those lines you end up getting your ass kicked. If I go in there thinking Bisping didn't look great in his last fight, or hasn't reached my level, I will end up waking up in the dressing room asking people how come I got beat."

In his last fight, Michael Bisping beat Matt Hamill at UFC 75: Champion vs Champion in London. Although he won on points, many observers thought that Hamill had done enough to get the decision. Evans told the Daily Star that this controversy could work in the favour of his opponent.

"I think the criticism will actually fire him up to give the performance of his life. Bisping underestimated Hamill. Because Matt Hamill is known as a wrestler, Michael must have trained for nothing but wrestling in his training camp. I thought Bisping lost to Hamill but understand how the judges scored it for Bisping. It was a tough fight and, while Michael wasn't doing his best stuff in there stand-up wise, I felt that Hamill just didn't capitalise on some of the positions he got. If I get into those same positions, I will do everything to finish the fight and keep the fight out of the hands of the judges. You never know what kind of things the judges are looking for. He actually arrived in the Octagon for that fight looking rusty in the things he is usually best at – punching and kicking. I don't think he is going to make that mistake with me."

The King Has a New Mission. We can help. - 01 Nov 2007 01:19:32am

By Elvis Sinosic

"During Movember (the month formerly known as November) I'll be growin a Mo. That's right I'm bringing the Mo back because I'm passionate about changing men's health and the fight against male depression and prostate cancer. Why...

Depression affects 1 in 6 men...Most don't seek help. Untreated depression is a leading risk factor for suicide.

Last year in Australia 18,700 men were diagnosed with prostate cancer and more than 2,900 died of prostate cancer - equivalent to the number of women who die from breast cancer annually. Men are far less healthy than women. The average life expectancy of males is 5 years less than females.

To sponsor my Mo please go to www.movember.com/au/donate, enter my registration number which is 88590 and your credit card details. Or you can sponsor me by cheque made payable to the "Movember Foundation" clearly marking the donation as being for my Registration Number: 88590. Please mail cheques to: PO Box 292, Prahran VIC 3181. All donations over $2 are tax deductible.

The money raised by Movember is donated to the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia and beyondblue - the national depression initiative, which will use the funds to create awareness, fund research and increase support networks for those men who suffer from prostate cancer and male depression.

For those that have supported Movember in previous years you can be very proud of the impact it has had and can check out the detail at: Fundraising Outcomes.

Movember culminates at the end of the month at the Gala Partés. These glamorous and groomed events will see Tom Selleck and Borat look-a-likes battle it out for their chance to take home the prestigious Man of Movember title. If you would like to be part of this great night you'll need to purchase a Gala Parté ticket.

Thanks for your support

Elvis
