Injury Plagued Radach Enters IFL World Grand Prix Seeking Gold - 03 Nov 2007 06:59:34am

Posted: 03 Nov 2007 01:59 AM CDT

By Brian Knapp

Misfortune brought Benji Radach to the brink of madness, as a series of injuries conspired to ground his promising mixed martial arts career before it ever fully took flight. He disappeared from the sport for nearly three years, his life marred by neck, knee and jaw surgeries, along with a staph infection that almost cost him a limb. Nine hundred and fifty one days passed between fights, and Radach wondered often whether he would ever be healthy enough to compete again.

"I went back to the drawing board several times," Radach says. "I wondered if this sport was meant for me, wondered whether or not a higher power was telling me to do something else."

Five surgeries and countless looks in the mirror later, the 28-year-old has emerged as the middleweight favorite in the IFL World Grand Prix. The event kicks off this Saturday at the Sears Centre in Chicago and will conclude Saturday, Dec. 29 at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn. Radach stands two victories away from his first championship, though history has taught him to live in the present.

Lesnar Ready To Tackle MMA Fighting - 03 Nov 2007 06:01:18am

Posted: 03 Nov 2007 01:01 AM CDT

By Andrew Falzon

The past few weeks have been trying ones for the UFC. A war of words between the UFC's top brass and former UFC poster boy Randy Couture continues to boil and one of MMA's top heavyweights, Fedor Emelianenko, opted to join another organization. But while Couture and Emelianenko won't be plying their trade in an Octagon any time soon, the UFC has acquired a big-name fighter who they hope will fill the void.

Lesnar is best known for the four years he spent with World Wrestling Entertainment where the 6-foot-2, NCAA wrestling standout captured the WWE championship belt three times while antagonizing fans and fellow fighters alike. After an unsuccessful attempt at a pro football career, Lesnar made his professional MMA debut this past June, defeating Min Soo Kim in just over a minute with a single-leg takedown, followed by a ferocious ground-and-pound submission.

For Lesnar, the UFC marks the next chapter in an athletic career that now spans four sports. The UFC hopes that Lesnar will draw the same pay-per-view audiences he did for pro wrestling, and that he'll live up to his "The Next Big Thing" moniker.

Lesnar checked in for an exclusive interview with ESPN.com.

Andrew Falzon: How did all of this come about with the UFC, did you reach out to Dana White or did White reach out to you?
Brock Lesnar: There was interest from both parties. I'm not sure where the initial phone call came from or what it was about. I think what got the ball rolling was we went to the Randy Couture fight and had a meeting with White.

AF: Do you have any idea who your first opponent will be?
BL: At this time, no. The UFC has some things going on with Couture right now and I'm sure they're busy with that. Hopefully by the end of next week we'll know something. I'll fight whoever they put in front of me.

AF: In an earlier interview you said you'd like to fight Couture and Fedor Emelianenko. Is that something you'd still like to explore?

BL: Back when I made those statements, Couture was the UFC champion and Emelianenko was in talks with the UFC. So right now, I'm going to take it one fight at a time and work my way up to becoming the UFC heavyweight champion.

Fedor Emelianenko prepares for the World Combat Sambo Championship - 03 Nov 2007 01:20:46am

Posted: 02 Nov 2007 08:20 PM CDT

Fedor Emelianenko prepares for the World Combat Sambo Championship (Czech Republic, November 7-11).

Fedor is a member of Russian team among not solely experienced fightrers but young athletes as well. All of them are proud and ready to represent their country at the championship of such a high level. There are 40 of them in total. By the way Fedor's Red Devil teammate Radmir Gabdullin has earned his right to represent Russia in combat sambo, too.

This training took place in VGUFK hall on two sambo mats. It all started with some running, warm-up and then the main part which consisted in its entirety of working on wrestling skills.

Since the hall wouldn't hold all the 20 simultaneously fighting pairs, first were the lightweights (including females). Then it was heavyweights' turn including Fedor.

During one of the bouts a sparring-partner who Fedor was trainining with got injured following a hard handfall. No more accidents occured. Luckily.

Shortly you'll get an opportunity to watch video of this training where some highlights of the training are captured.

Sherk not stripped; Penn-Stevenson for interim title - 03 Nov 2007 12:12:00am

Posted: 02 Nov 2007 07:12 PM CDT

By Kevin Iole

Sean Sherk is going to remain the UFC's lightweight champion, but B.J. Penn and Joe Stevenson will fight for a lightweight belt at UFC 80 in January in Newcastle, England, UFC president Dana White said Friday.

White said he's not going to strip Sherk of his lightweight championship because he is fed up with the California Athletic Commission's handling of Sherk's steroids case.

Sherk tested positive for the anabolic steroid nandrolone following his successful title defense on July 7 at UFC 73 in Sacramento, Calif., over Hermes Franca. The California Athletic Commission fined Sherk $2,500 and suspended him for a year.

Sherk, though, denied taking steroids and appealed. His hearing was to have been on Wednesday, but it was postponed until Nov. 13 when members of the California commission realized they had not received the 17-page brief attorney Howard Jacobs had submitted on Sherk's behalf.

White had vowed to strip Sherk of the title, but said Friday that he no longer plans to do so. "The way this whole thing has been handled has been a mess," White said.

He said Penn and Stevenson, who said he learned on Tuesday that he and his wife will have another son, will fight for the interim title as the main event of UFC 80 in Newcastle, England, likely on Jan. 19.

The winner of that bout would then presumably face Sherk once Sherk's status is defined by the commission.

White said heavyweights Gabriel Gonzaga and Fabricio Werdum would meet in the co-main on UFC 80.

Ken Shamrock vs Dana White - 02 Nov 2007 11:54:46pm

Posted: 02 Nov 2007 06:54 PM CDT

By Damon Martin

Since exiting the Ultimate Fighting Championship in 2006, Ken Shamrock has stayed quiet about his departure from the organization, but with Randy Couture's recent resignation, the former "Ultimate Fighter" coach has now voiced his displeasure with the promotion as well and says he is also involved in a lawsuit against them for alleged breech of contract.

Shamrock was released from his contract in 2006 and moved on to coach a team in the International Fight League, but according to the UFC Hall of Famer, it was not by his choice. He is seeking legal action because of his forced exit from the promotion.

"The fact is, we have a lawsuit going on right now," Shamrock stated in an interview with MMAWeekly Radio. "They released me from my contract. I had one fight left. Now, we're going to go after them for the damages and that's why I couldn't fight. I couldn't fight because I was holding up to my end of the bargain with them. Then they turn around and didn't hold up to their end of the bargain because they released me from my contract illegally, they breeched my contract, I am now open and ready to fight."

De La Hoya Receives WBO "Fighter Of The Year" & "Promoter Of The Year" Awards - 02 Nov 2007 11:31:25pm

Posted: 02 Nov 2007 06:31 PM CDT

It's the fistic version of a daily double, and a distinction no other boxer has ever achieved, but yesterday at the World Boxing Organization (WBO) convention in Puerto Rico, Oscar de la Hoya was honored twice by the sanctioning body, both as "Fighter of The Decade" and "Promoter of The Year".

"It's a great honor for me to accept these awards from the WBO, and I'm truly humbled by all of this," said De La Hoya. "To be recognized for what I've done – in and out of the ring – has always been something I hoped would happen, and I thank the WBO for making that dream a reality."

Also honored was Golden Boy Promotions Vice President/Matchmaker Eric Gomez, who captured the "Matchmaker of the Year" award from the organization. This marks the second time Gomez has won the award.

As a boxer, De La Hoya, a 1992 United States Olympic Gold Medalist, has made his mark with 38 wins in 43 fights and the amazing achievement of winning world titles in six weight classes. A future Hall of Famer, the 34-year-old "Golden Boy" recently fought Floyd Mayweather in a bout which shattered pay-per-view records.

But De La Hoya's impact is not only felt in the ring, but outside of it. As President of Golden Boy Promotions, De La Hoya has helped put on some of the biggest events in boxing over the past few years, and he currently promotes a host of the game's biggest stars, including Bernard Hopkins, Shane Mosley, Juan Manuel Marquez and Marco Antonio Barrera.

De La Hoya accepted the awards yesterday at the WBO Convention held at the Ritz Carlton in San Juan, Puerto Rico amongst almost 500 people.

Calzaghe-Kessler Make Weight - 02 Nov 2007 11:14:04pm

Super Middleweight world champions Mikkel Kessler (39-0, 29 KO's - WBA/WBC champion) and Joe Calzaghe (43-0, 32 KO's - WBO champion) each made the 168 lb. division limit today too much drama prior to their highly anticipated unification battle tomorrow night in Cardiff, Wales.

Originally, Kessler stepped on two ounces over the 168 lb. limit, but after shedding his clothes, hit the target weight on the nose. Calzaghe made weight without incident, registering at 167.5 lbs on his first try.

Werdum And The Battle With Napao - 02 Nov 2007 10:52:53pm

Posted: 02 Nov 2007 05:52 PM CDT

Not having fought since April 21, when he was defeated by the Belarusian Andre Arlovski in a judges' decision at UFC 70, Fabricio Werdum finally returns to the octagon. The Southern Brazilian will have before him a fundamental fight in defining his MMA career. In the ever-more disputed heavyweight division of the American organization, a second loss in a row would complicate the fighter's life.

The Carioca Gabriel Napao is going through the same situation, making it a fight between black belt Jiu-Jitsu world champions, in a battle of life and death. The stage for the bout will be UFC 80, to take place in England. Direct from Porto Alegre, where he is accompanying the birth of his daughter, Werdum granted this exclusive interview to GRACIEMAG.com, speaking of his first and second fight against Napao, training and much more, check it out:

GRACIEMAG.com: Have you known about this fight for long? What have your preparations been like?
Werdum: Not for long. Rudimar called me saying the UFC had made an offer, and that it was to fight against Napao. As I don't choose my opponents, I accepted right then and there. I think it'll be a good fight, I'll accept the fight wherever it takes place, whether it's standing or on the ground. I'm training hard for this at Chute Boxe, training there is really intense, in two months my muay thai has improved considerably, besides lots of submission grappling and Jiu-Jitsu. The training there is marvelous and complete, I'm very confident, mainly about the standup.

IFL Trio Walk Different Paths - 02 Nov 2007 10:39:45pm

Posted: 02 Nov 2007 05:39 PM CDT

By Scott Holmes

After defeating Ricco Rodriguez in the IFL championships, heavyweight Ben Rothwell said something that stuck out. It wasn't something that you hear often.

"I hope I represented the IFL," he said, "and the Silverbacks and Pat Miletich well tonight."

Here was Rothwell, after running the table in the IFL heavyweight division and handling a former world champ with relative ease, making a point to show respect to the league that had set the stage for his coronation as the real deal.

When the decision was made to air a portion of the IFL Grand Prix live on broadcast television, Rothwell and lightweight Chris Horodecki were tapped as the featured fighters. They had become poster boys for the promotion.

Yet this Saturday brings the Grand Prix, and Rothwell has been removed from the posters. He is out of the show and probably out of the IFL for good after a contractual dispute devolved into a war of words between his manager, Monte Cox, and IFL commissioner Kurt Otto.

IFL, UFC undergoing big changes - 02 Nov 2007 10:03:46pm

By David A. Avila

MIXED MARTIAL ARTS NOTEBOOK - A world grand prix tournament's success holds one mixed martial arts organization's future in the balance, while MMA's biggest organization finally unveiled its pay-per-view numbers and other oddities transpired this week.

It may be the start of a revolution.

First, the International Fight League, which has struggled to maintain equilibrium, hopes this week's World Grand Prix tournament serves as a gyroscope Saturday. The event will be televised live at 9 p.m. ET on MyNetworkTV a cable network.

No IFL event has been televised live.

"I think it's incredibly important," said Jay Larkin, CEO for IFL and a former sports programmer for Showtime. "A few years ago it would not have mattered that much. But in this new digital world with cell phones that carry videos, sports is one of the few areas that is not immune to the immediate distribution through the Internet."

MMA demands immediate results or it becomes ancient history, he said.

IFL World Grand Prix Preview - Part Two - 02 Nov 2007 07:53:09pm

Posted: 02 Nov 2007 02:53 PM CDT

By Ben Fowlkes

We're now one day away from the first-ever IFL World Grand Prix, and one day from the first live MMA broadcast on network TV. Part one of our preview looked at lightweights and welterweights, so now it's time to dissect the middleweights through heavyweights, and there are some interesting wild cards in the bunch.

Benji Radach (15-3) vs. Brent Beauparlant (6-4)

Radach is the consensus choice for the league's top middleweight at this point, but Beauparlant has been improving his overall game at an almost frightening pace and he's more than a little upset that no one is giving him a chance to win this fight.

His wrestling skills have always been his strength, but he won his last bout with striking and is a smart enough fighter to know it's going to take a good game plan as well as good execution to beat Radach.

"The Razor" would like to keep this standing and put his superior speed in the striking game to work. If Beauparlant can close the distance he has a chance to slow Radach down, but he'll want to be very careful not to catch one on the chin in the process.

Restrictions Could KO Cage Fighting - 02 Nov 2007 07:47:28pm

Posted: 02 Nov 2007 02:47 PM CDT

Leada Gore

Hartselle is exercising its right to regulate mixed martial arts events in the city. Following an opinion by the state Attorney General that cleared the way for the city to place restrictions on the activity, the City Council has adopted an ordinance aimed at mixed martial arts events, including cage fighting.

The new ordinance requires all mixed martial arts participants to be 19 or 18 if they have written parental permission. It also requires promoters of these events to have a general liability insurance policy with coverage of $1 million per participant, as well as an additional $2 million worth of coverage for the promoter.

Promoters are required to purchase a business license. All participants in any mixed marital arts event will have to receive medical clearance before and after their fight.

Promoters will be required to have a paramedic and an emergency medical technician stationed next to the combat area and an ambulance at the location. Promoters will also be required to give notice to the local emergency room before an event and will be required to pay for an off-duty police officer to be on the premise.

The regulations don't apply to amateur or professional boxing or wrestling. Mixed martial arts classes are also exempt.

The mixed martial arts regulations come on the heels of a squirmish between city leaders and Robert Clairday, who operates Clariday's Boxing and Sports Center and also held cage fighting matches in the city. Clariday said the restrictions prompted him to move his business and his matches outside the city.

The application process for "The Ultimate Fighter 7," a new installment of the Spike TV reality series, is now underway. The application deadline for potential cast members is Monday, Nov. 26. Casting will likely be concluded by January, and filming should begin in April.

Although UFC matchmaker Joe Silva mentioned last month that "The Ultimate Fighter 7" will feature middleweight fighters, Spike TV officials tell MMAjunkie.com that a weight class has not been determined and neither have the season's celebrity coaches. Once the UFC and Spike TV secure two coaches, the weight class will be announced officially.

Rival Promoter Suggests Injunction Against MFC 14 Main Event - 02 Nov 2007 06:17:24pm

Posted: 02 Nov 2007 01:17 PM CDT

By Mike Russell

Hardcore Championship Fighting CEO Keith Crawford sent a letter to Association of Boxing Commissions President Timothy J. Lueckenhoff this week in hopes of preventing a rival promoter from staging a main event later this month.

Crawford presented his concerns over the scheduled Maximum Fighting Championship 14 bout between UFC veteran Shonie Carter and Brad Zazulak on Friday, Nov. 23 at the River Cree Resort and Casino in Edmonton, Alberta. Crawford contends Zazulak, who has only two professional MMA fights to his credit, should not be sanctioned to compete against Carter, a veteran of more than 90 matches. Crawford believes the fight is "dangerous" and could "cause serious damage to" or "tarnish the good name of mixed martial arts."

The MFC event falls under the jurisdiction of the River Cree Combative Sports Commission; the commission can bypass Section 83 of the Canadian Criminal Code, which considers prize fights in MMA or boxing illegal.

Although it encompasses both sports, Section 83 is enforced on a selective basis in Canadian provinces choosing to sanction boxing but not MMA. Disregarded in some provinces, the law states that fighters, reporters and cornermen, as well as regulatory and medical officials, in attendance at such events are subject to criminal prosecution.

Derrick Noble Moving Down To Lightweight in 2008 - 02 Nov 2007 06:10:37pm

Posted: 02 Nov 2007 01:10 PM CDT

By Brian Knapp

Derrick Noble revealed this week his intention to drop from welterweight to lightweight in 2008. The 29-year-old former Marine indicated he would pursue one more fight at 170 pounds before the year is out.

Noble (21-10-1), who challenged Eddie Alvarez for the Mixed Fighting Championship welterweight crown in 2006, has lost back-to-back fights as a welterweight. He sees the 155-pound division as a natural fit.

"The only reason I'm considering the drop is because, with the training I'm doing now, I'm walking around too light for 170," Noble said. "It has nothing to do with me feeling like I can't compete at 170; it has more to do with me being lighter and feeling like a drop to 155 will be a new challenge for me. Of course, in most cases, it should give me a size and strength advantage in my fights, as long as I get down correctly."

Pete Sell Awarded His BJJ Black Belt - 02 Nov 2007 05:56:25pm

Posted: 02 Nov 2007 12:56 PM CDT

By Brian Knapp

Representatives from the Serra Jiu-Jitsu Academy in East Meadow, N.Y. announced this week that UFC veteran Pete Sell had been awarded his black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Sell (7-4), a longtime protégé and close friend of UFC welterweight champion Matt Serra, has lost three consecutive fights, a stretch of adversity that includes his knockout loss to Nate Quarry at UFC Fight Night in September.

A native of Bayshore, N.Y., Sell upset Phil Baroni in his promotional debut at UFC 51 in February 2005; he submitted the middleweight brawler with a third-round guillotine choke. The 25-year-old Sell, however, is perhaps best known for his one-punch knockout loss to Scott Smith at "The Ultimate Fighter 4" Live Finale a year ago.

Ghosts In The Attic, Taylor Invokes Rematch Clause - 02 Nov 2007 05:49:55pm

Posted: 02 Nov 2007 12:49 PM CDT

By Jeff Young

Ever since new middleweight champion Kelly "The Ghost" Pavlik knocked out former undefeated champion Jermain "Bad Intentions" Taylor, many have been wondering exactly what the former champion's next move would be. There have been talks of him taking an interim fight before fighting the hard-hitting Pavlik again and there have also been talks of Pavlik taking on WBO contender John Duddy. Finally letting his intentions be known, Jermain Taylor has opted to invoke his rematch clause and take on Pavlik immediately.

At first, I agreed with the talk of an interim fight for Taylor. The reasoning is that after being knocked out the way Taylor was, you never know exactly how a fighter will react in the ring. An interim fight would give you an idea. After a while, however, I changed my mind. The reason is that If an interim fight took place, we may never get a chance to see Pavlik-Taylor 2. There are just too many things that could happen. Taylor could get injured in the interim fight and be forced to pull out of the rematch or worse, he could lose the interim fight altogether. The same thing could happen to Pavlik. He too could lose to Duddy or get injured. There is just too many factors that could possibly get involved.

Now that Taylor has opted for the rematch, there are certain things that he has to take care of in order to be successful. First and foremost, Taylor needs to get his mind right. What I mean is that Taylor cannot go in there with the thought of being knocked out in the back of his mind. He has to have the same type of attitude that the great Chiquita Gonzalez had for his rematch with Michael Carbajal. That attitude was "hey, you got me last time, but I am the more skilled boxer and if I stick to my gameplan, I am going to outbox you all night and walk out with my pride and the win."

An Interview With Shogun & Ninja Rua - 02 Nov 2007 05:22:46pm

Posted: 02 Nov 2007 12:22 PM CDT

Mauricio "SHOGUN" Rua

PDG: Since your successful knee surgery. How does the knee feel and what will be your recovery time-frame until you can start training again?
Shogun: The knee is great, the surgery was a success and the doctor told me that everything is running better than the original schedule. I'm already doing physiotherapy and I think that I will be fight training in December. I will be back fighting in February or March, I hope so!!!!

PDG: Can you give fans your breakdown of your fight with Forrest. What went right and what went wrong?
Shogun: I don't like to give excuses, I lost and that's it, period. Nothing went right; I assume this and the injury interfered in my training. Specifically in regards to training kicks and running. I also had a lot of new things in my life, a wedding and a new home, but it is no problem, let's move ahead. I don't want to talk about the past, let's see what is coming next. I'm still very young and I know that I can get the UFC belt in the future; I will be back better than ever.

PDG: Can you describe the difference between fighting in the PRIDE ring and the UFC cage?

Shogun: In the cage the fight is more aggressive and there are no corners to get a break. I already fought in the Cage before with no problem; my defeat doesn't have anything to do with the Cage or Ring.

Murilo "NINJA" Rua

PDG: Since your loss to Robbie Lawler; what have you been doing? Do you have any lingering injuries from that fight?
Ninja: I changed some things in my training, now I have a new guy from Cuba helping me in the wrestling and physical preparation. Aleho Morales, he has an excellent background with the Cuban Olympic Team. Beside that I'm training hard with the Chute Boxe Team and I'm in shape again. Thank God that I didn't have any serious injury in the fight against Rob.

PDG: Have you begun your training for the December 1st fight against Xavier Foupa-Pokam? Are you training differently for this fight than you did for the Lawler fight?
Ninja: As I told you I am giving more attention to the wrestling and two weeks after the fight against Rob I was training again, it is my job. I love to fight and I have plans to have at least 4 fights in 2008, with one of them being for the Cage Rage belt.

Wrestler Choi Hong-man Now Grapples With a Mic - 02 Nov 2007 05:08:05pm

Posted: 02 Nov 2007 12:08 PM CDT

K-1 fighter Choi Hong-man, the former ssirum (traditional Korean wrestling) champion, has transformed into a rapper, performing alongside model-turned-singer Kang Soo-hee in a duo called Beauty and the Beast. The duo will release their first album next month.

On Thursday Choi had his pictures taken for the album's cover at a nightclub in Gangnam in southern Seoul. During his wrestling days he picked up nickname "Techno Goliath" for dancing on a sand-covered floor right after winning a match. "I like dancing and I was a good dancer when I was a student," Choi said. "I always dreamed of becoming a singer whenever I saw singers performing on TV."

The 2.18-meter tall goliath continued, "If I weren't this tall, I'd work in show business. I gave up my dream at the age of 15 when I started Korean wrestling. Now my wish has come true, although belatedly." The duo will make its national debut in mid-December with a quick-tempo track called "Pride."

"Although I'm about to debut as a singer, I'm an athlete and sports is the most important thing to me," he said. Choi still fights, and next month he will head to Japan to prepare for the K-1 World Grand Prix Final in Yokohama for a match with Jerome Le Banner on Dec. 8.

Gary Shaw Is Not The Only Promoter Changing Weight Classes - 02 Nov 2007 01:54:41pm

Posted: 02 Nov 2007 08:54 AM CDT

By Jordan Breen

If you thought Gary Shaw and ProElite were the only ones waging war on the weights and measures of MMA, think again.

DEEP big boss Shigeru Saeki has announced that he is set to make a plethora of changes in an effort to remodel DEEP in 2008. Perhaps most interesting, he is strongly considering revamping DEEP's weight classes to suit those of the unified rules of mixed martial arts used in North American regulation and sanctioning.

Currently the only promotion in Japan that uses the unified rules in any form is Greatest Common Multiple, which employs the full unified rules for its Cage Force series. Although Saeki has not elaborated on his desire to move toward the unified weight classes, it would appear that he is intent on keeping the current rule structure of DEEP, which includes stomps and soccer kicks while prohibiting elbows.

In a recent interview regarding upstart company World Victory Road and the establishment of the Japanese MMA Association, Saeki said he loathed the idea of homogenizing the rules of MMA in Japan. He feels rule structures are essential in providing the "flavor" of various promotions.

The ‘Count’down to 78 - Week Two - 02 Nov 2007 12:49:09pm

Posted: 02 Nov 2007 07:49 AM CDT

By Michael Bisping

Hi guys. Training has gone extremely well this week; so well that I've realized I was even more over-trained for the last fight than I originally thought. Two weeks away from my fight at UFC 75, I felt tired and just wanted the fight to come and go so I could relax.

But now, two weeks out from UFC 78, I can't wait for the first bell, and I am really excited and looking forward to it. I am counting the days until I fly over to America.

NOT DRINKING THE KOOL-AID
As I said last week, me and Rashad isn't a grudge match. I like the guy and respect him as a fighter but of course, all that doesn't mean I'm not going to go all out to beat the crap out of him at UFC 78 - especially as he seems to be dismissing me as an opponent.

I read Rashad's column on UFC.com the other day and also watched his video interview, both with great interest. He seems to be saying I think I am better than I actually am, that I am fooling myself into a false sense of security or whatever and am even taking it easy in the gym because I believe my own hype.

IFL World Grand Prix 2007 Preview - 02 Nov 2007 12:16:11pm

Posted: 02 Nov 2007 07:16 AM CDT

By Ricardo Mendoza

After a long and strenuous team season, the International Fight League is now set to begin crowning champions in five different weight divisions with its 2007 World Grand Prix, which is set to take place on Nov. 3 at the Sears Centre in Chicago.

What was once a promising card full of the IFL's biggest stars vying for a championship belt in their respective weight division has now gone through drastic changes due to contract disputes and injuries.

One of the more notable absences in the Grand Prix is the promotion's No. 1 heavyweight, Ben Rothwell, who along with Mike Whitehead and Antonio McKee is absent due to contractual disputes. Other stars like Andre Gusmao, Brad Blackburn, Pat Healy, Reese Andy and Mike Ciesnolevicz were forced out because of various injuries.

Radach Tops All Heading Into IFL Grand Prix - 02 Nov 2007 12:10:31pm

Posted: 02 Nov 2007 07:10 AM CDT

By Mick Hammond

There's no doubt that heading into Saturday's first round of the International Fight League World Grand Prix, Los Angeles Anaconda's middleweight Benji "Razor" Radach is on fire as the league prepares to crown its first individual champions.

After missing nearly three years of competition due to various injuries, he was something of a wildcard coming into the 2007 IFL season.

But after dispatching the very tough Ryan McGivern of the Quad Cities Silverbacks in the opening team fight, Radach showed that he could be a viable threat in the league, even while still not 100% healthy.

Eight months and three fights later, he is undefeated in the league and the top seed in the opening ground of the four-man middleweight bracket.

"I'm feeling good, more confident and stronger than I've ever been," said Radach heading into this weekend's show. "Training-wise everything's going good, injury-wise things are great. So I'm feeling confident."

As the top seed in the tournament, he knows he's the man everyone wants to defeat, starting with Brent Beauparlant of the Toronto Dragons.

Baroni Not Happy With Reduced Sentence - 02 Nov 2007 12:05:08pm

Posted: 02 Nov 2007 07:05 AM CDT

By Tom Hamlin

LOS ANGELES – Phil Baroni looked morose as he exited his hearing with the California State Athletic Commission on Wednesday. His suspension of one year had been reduced to six months, but his name was not cleared.

"It feels like a loss to me," Baroni told reporters. "I'm convicted of using steroids. I didn't use steroids. I thought I took enough tests to prove I didn't. I wanted more than anything to prove I didn't do it. To be cleared of it. And I'm not. I'm labeled guilty.

"I'll be able to fight soon, but I still didn't get what I wanted."

Baroni testified in front of the CSAC board for nearly a half-hour, flatly denying any steroid use and speaking at length about his career and training methods.

The centerpiece of his defense was four separate steroid tests he took around the time of his fight. The first was taken at the behest of manager Ken Pavia, who claimed he ordered it prior to the fight after discovering one of the 67 supplements Baroni was taking carried a warning for causing false positives. Baroni said he didn't want the test floating around for possible detection by the media, so he had his fiancé's name used in the results.

Marquez-Juarez Presser - 02 Nov 2007 11:44:16am

Posted: 02 Nov 2007 06:44 AM CDT

By Chad Barcus

The Best Western Las Brisas in Tucson, Arizona was the site for the final press conference for the highly anticipated fight between WBC super featherweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez and Rocky Juarez. All of the major participants were on hand to promote the fight, with the exception of Robert "The Ghost" Guerrero, who will be fighting in the co-main event when he squares off against Martin Honorio for Guerrero's IBF featherweight belt.

Guerrero's co-manager, Bob Santos, represented his fighter at the press conference and explained the reason for Guerrero's absence. Unfortunately, the Guerrero family has just discovered that Robert Guerrero's wife has been diagnosed with leukemia. "Obviously, it's a sad situation," explained Santos, "but he will fight on Saturday night. He will be at the weigh-ins, obviously, tomorrow." Our thoughts and best wishes at Fightnews go out to the Guerrero family.

Raising kids tougher than KOing foes for Alexander - 02 Nov 2007 11:36:37am

Posted: 02 Nov 2007 06:36 AM CDT

By Kevin Iole

Houston Alexander chuckles and begs you not to make him out to be Superman.

After carefully examining the facts, though, you arrive at the inescapable conclusion that Superman is the perfect nickname for the fast-rising UFC light heavyweight contender.

And no, it's not because of his two knockout victories in his first two UFC fights, which took a combined one minute and 49 seconds, though his victims, Keith Jardine and Alessio Sakara, may be buying into the Superman hype a bit at this point.

And neither is it because of his ability to bench press as much as 450 pounds, or more than twice his body weight, because being a star weight lifter is no guarantee of success as a mixed martial arts fighter.

Alexander, who faces his biggest challenge on Nov. 17 at UFC 78 in Newark, N.J., when he meets Thiago Silva, earns the Superman moniker every day as the single parent of six children.

Taking care of six children between the ages of 5 and 16 is a big enough job for a small squadron of adults. For a guy who has emerged as one of the world's elite light heavyweights, with all the training and business demands that entails, to also be able to cook and clean around the house each day is super hero kind of stuff.

Travis Lutter: "I Really Think I Can Beat Anderson Silva!" - 02 Nov 2007 11:26:47am

Posted: 02 Nov 2007 06:26 AM CDT

By Percy Crawford

UFC middleweight Travis Lutter talks about his recovery from the neck injury he suffered, his future plans and much more. "If they gave me a rematch with Anderson, I'd beat him," stated a confident Lutter and you don't want to miss what else he had to say about Silva's win over Rich Franklin and why he thinks Anderson would be concerned in a rematch with him. Check it out.

PC: How have you been doing my man?

TL: I'm doing good. I'm still recovering from the neck injury. It's one of them things that takes time.

PC: Do you have a timetable on how long you will be out for?
TL: I'm hoping for February to return back to the Octagon. I'm waiting on my neck right now. It looks like I'm going to have to get another shot. They're going to give me another Cortisone shot right in the disc of my neck and hopefully that works as far as them thinking that could fix it.

PC: Is this a reoccurring injury?
TL: I've had it before, but I've never had it this bad. When I fought Trevor Prangley for the first time in the UFC four years ago, I hurt my neck real bad before that fight. This is a more severe case of that same injury.

Jason Lambert: "I Would Like To Fight Wanderlei Silva!" - 02 Nov 2007 11:24:10am

By Percy Crawford

UFC light heavyweight Jason Lambert gets us caught up on what he's been doing since his last fight, a stunning second round knockout over Renato "Babalu" Sobral at UFC 68 earlier this year. Lambert shares his thoughts on the light heavyweight division, his future plans and much more. Check it out!

PC: How's everything been going Jason?

JL: Everything has been going good man. I got a bunch of other guys that train with me that fight on local shows so I've just been helping them get ready.

PC: That was one of my questions for you. Have you been helping fighters get prepared and staying active in the gym?
JL: Oh yeah! I've been training my butt off. I had a fight that was scheduled for September so I trained. I had an eight week camp for that and I was training my butt off. I've been in the gym the whole time.

PC: How far into training camp had you gotten when you found out that Wilson Gouveia had to withdraw from the fight?
JL: I found out a week and a half prior to the event so basically, I was ready.

The Merger: Team Tompkins + Xtreme Couture - 02 Nov 2007 10:10:06am

Posted: 02 Nov 2007 05:10 AM CDT

This weekend the merger between Xtreme Couture and Team Tompkins will be on display when the IFL airs the opening round of its Grand Prix tournament. Shawn Tompkins took the job of Head Trainer/Gym manager at Xtreme Couture in August. Saturday night Chris Horodecki will be wearing the Xtreme Couture Logo on his shorts along with Jay Hieron and Alex Schoenauer.

Tompkins brought Chris and his other prized students Sam Stout and Mark Hominick into the fold at Xtreme Couture and the three young stars have added to the already impressive stable. All three have incredible kickboxing skills and are true team players, fitting right in with the team first environment at Xtreme Couture.

"I'm thrilled to be here, working alongside and training with Randy Couture, who I hold in the highest regard. It will be an honor cornering with him Saturday night," says Coach Tompkins. "I'm happy that world will get to see that we are working together. I'm glad to bring my fighters from Canada to create the ultimate fighting system."

Interview with Mike “Quicksand” Pyle - 02 Nov 2007 10:04:46am

Posted: 02 Nov 2007 05:04 AM CDT

Mike "Quicksand" Pyle is ready. November 10th he goes into the cage with Jake Shields as a featured fight for Elite XC on Showtime. Mike has been working out like a maniac for this fight and is in the best shape of his career. Boxing coach Ron Frazier marveled at his improved punching power and accuracy earlier today.

We had a chance to sit down with Mike and ask him a couple questions after Pro Practice tonight. Here's what he had to say:

There have been rumors about a fight between you and Jake Shields since mid summer. Is this a fight you've been looking forward to?

Yes. It's a fight I've been looking forward to.

Does Jake being ranked in the Top 10 at 17olbs make this fight more appealing?

No, not at all. he's just another person with 2 arms and 2 legs like me.

Does the attention Jake has been getting bother you?

No.

Elite XC signed you to a 3 fight deal at the beginning of this year. This is your first fight on TV. Are you disappointed with the way Elite XC promoted you?
Exactly. I wanted to be promoted on TV and then have a title shot. Thats what I've been asking for. I wanted to get on a main card and showcase my skills then move on to a title shot. They didn't want to work with me that way. So I chose not to extend my contract at this time.

Brazilians Ready For IFL - 02 Nov 2007 09:49:27am

Posted: 02 Nov 2007 04:49 AM CDT

This Saturday attention will be returned to the IFL, the organization famous for its team disputes, for the performances of its individuals. The GPs in each of the five categories have the intention of naming champions for each weight group, so that in 2008, besides the traditional team dispute, there will be fights for belts. In this stage the tournament's semifinals will be disputed. The finals shall take place on December 29.

Representing Brazil are Delson Pe-de-Chumbo, among welterweights, Wagnney Fabiano, at lightweight, and Antoine Jaoude, at heavyweight.

"I have my head in the right place and very focused. I've already beaten the guy on the ground, I got his arm. But I think he will be tougher for already knowing me. He's a good striker and will put the pressure on, but I'm going after him, to impose my game, take him down and try and submit him. I expect to win this semi, go full steam through to the finals and later get together with the Pitbulls and the master (Renzo). I'd like to fight for the UFC too, I want to fight all those tough guys. There are some good guys, like Matt Hughes, Matt Serra and George Saint Pierre, if I have the opportunity I'll go after those guys," declared Pe de Chumbo.

Frank vs Ken Shamrock Coming To EliteXC!? - 02 Nov 2007 09:08:08am

Posted: 02 Nov 2007 04:08 AM CDT

By Brian Knapp

EliteXC Live Events President Gary Shaw confirmed this week he has held preliminary discussions about promoting a potential megafight between brothers Frank and Ken Shamrock within EliteXC. The two adopted brothers have expressed a willingness to fight one another in the past.

"I talked to my team about it," Shaw said. "I would love to do brother versus brother. It would be a great promotion."

Frank Shamrock (22-8-1), a former UFC middleweight champion and King of Pancrase, submitted Phil Baroni with a rear-naked choke June 22 to win the vacant Strikeforce middleweight crown. He has won 11 of his last 12 fights, the lone setback a disqualification loss to Renzo Gracie last February. The soon-to-be 35-year-old holds victories over Bas Rutten, former UFC light heavyweight king Tito Ortiz and veteran Jeremy Horn.

Ken Shamrock (26-12-2), meanwhile, has not competed since losing to Ortiz by first-round TKO last October. What's more, the 44-year-old has not won a fight since June 2004 and has lost six of his past seven bouts. He owns wins over former UFC heavyweight champion Maurice Smith, Dan Severn and Rutten.

In addition, NUI, a "healthy kids lifestyle" brand, will integrate nutritional advice throughout the program.

"Good habits start at an early age when it comes to health and fitness, and we are thrilled to work with two companies that are making a positive difference in the lives of children and young adults across the country," said Douglas DeLuca, chief executive officer of Los Angeles-based ProElite, Inc. "Physical education should stimulate the minds of our youth, and this program does just that by entertaining and educating at the same time."

"ProElite and NUI share our core educational values, which is one of the reasons why we chose to include self-defense and mixed martial arts circuits, along with nutritional advice in our training package," said Tom Root, chief executive officer of HOPSports, Inc. "With Herschel Walker and Gina Carano hosting this segment, we are certain that audiences will resonate with the program and receive the necessary motivation and encouragement to lead a healthy lifestyle."
